Seriously. I bought a 1TB one over 1.5 years ago for less than $200. It's been collecting dust. Looks like I can list it on eBay and break even. I thought that $200 was all gone already, based on how quickly storage prices depreciate.

Exactly; transparent bilking of consumers. Companies involved have been caught & fined a token, theatrical pittance; especially compared to the massive profits from shafting us All

Lol, false shortages... what? It's a real shortage. Manufacturers can't keep up with demand because everything is using NAND now. SSDs becoming the hard drives of preference over traditional mechanical drives. Smartphones are increasingly using more and more NAND as well. Meanwhile NAND supply is stagnant as manufacturers are transitioning to the 3D NAND production process.

Uh, yeah, this is an absolutely real supply shortage and there's absolutely nothing fake about it. Not sure where people talking about "fines" and "getting caught" are pulling it from, but it's not reality.

It takes a long time to ramp up production on this stuff and it's simply not pacing with demand given the explosion in applications. Just a few years ago this was niche and enthusiast; it's now completely mainstream.

It's a weird situation when an existing technology increases in price like this, but that's going to be the reality for the near term. And it's not going to catch up overnight, either, so there's very little wisdom in trying to "wait it out" if you have an immediate need.

any articles on the fines and collusion? I've heard it said numerous times now and hadn't heard about. There's a legit shortage and I assumed it was because Fabs are expensive to build and the 14nm shrink got all the Fab attention. OEMs are switching RAM Fabs to Nand to try to help the shortage cause RAM to go up as well. If there are empty fabs just sitting I can see that being a false shortage but you can't really call NOT investing whatever hundreds of millions to billions it takes to create a fab "collusion"

Sure, it's a complex issue w/ many variables, but these corporations have EACH set Multiple precedents for defrauding consumers, misleading retailers & eroding public trust in their brands. Many of us remain skeptical about comments made without proof (as we ALL should be)- exactly why we need sites like SD

http://darrellx.com/buildapc/pric...collusion/ (this page is best, many cases / mfrs listed)

https://www.techpowerup.com/22835...-ssd-needs (some backstory on actual shortages, causes AND company histories of fraud)

There's much more awaiting anyone prepped for a 'deep dive' - these are all from First 2 Google pages..

wait...It is completely new technology now right? The nvme is 3D vnand which is suppose to be soley dominated by Samsung. Recently, the price has actually drop significantly. 2D TLC used to cost a lot less, but it wouldnt be comparable at all to 3D vnand in terms of durability and speed.
