Goodbye Keurig...I went to the dark side and now grind coffee beans

70,256 5,366 August 7, 2017 at 12:52 PM in Grocery (4)
I was out of town for a month and just couldn't get past the fact that you cannot clean the internal reservoir of a Keurig. Being the germaphobe that I am and allergic to mold..and ick...I couldn't get myself to use it again after it had been unplugged for so long Stick Out Tongue

I never really drank coffee when I drove a school bus (a cappuccino here or there doesn't count) in my book.

The Keurig made it simple, quick and clean.. no fuss no muss.

I had a reg coffee pot in the cupboard for when relatives came to town but I preferred my weak, sweet coffee pods.
Even some of the medications I have to take can cause acid re-flux issues so weaker coffee and not being dependent on it made sense... *also prone to migraines anyway.

Well, I spent 3 weeks with my brother and my sister stayed over most nights..and both drink coffee religiously..so yes, there I was drinking fresh ground organic coffee beans.. so it was fairly strong.
I know that if I don't wean off it slowly ..weaker and weaker I'll have one heck of a headache..so I gave in to the dark side and bought a bean grinder and organic beans laugh out loud

smh

This is the canister we use for our coffee beans, it allows you to remove most of the air regardless of how many or how few coffee beans are in it. We really like it.

I have 2 of these. I was buying Starbucks beans but after 3-4 days of opening the bag they pretty much lost any flavor they had and I ended up with stale bitter coffee. Probably a combination of the coffee and the canister's seal limitations. I'm going to try leaving my beans in their bag then storing in the canister.

I think I see your problem there.

We buy from a local roasting company that is sold at the local grocery stores and the beans don't loose their flavor, we usually go through one bag per week.

I just started using a local roaster yesterday. I hope thats what the problem is.
Buying Starbucks isnt usually really bad till the summer. With temps in the upper 90's every day coffee gets mishandled one way or another,by the time it makes it to me.
I bought some Starbucks beans from Target.com last year, and when the postman delivered them you could tell the package had spent all day and then maybe some in a super heated mail truck.. The box was physically hot to the touch, and the beans were ruined. I am super glad I found a local roaster .

It makes a huge difference in the flavor. We tried buying from a local roaster but they were a long way from where we live and so hard to reach due to traffic being so bad in that area that we finally gave up and went with another local roaster. But in between the two we tried a couple of local roasters that had bitter beans or sour beans.

Well, thank goodness someone finally mentioned Hawaiian Kona coffee. I've found it to be better than ANY other coffee, ever. In the 70s, you could get a bag of 50/50 Kona blend for barely more than regular coffee. Then people caught on and the price soared. Now you're lucky to find a 10% Kona blend for less than $20. :stomps_off:

Pshaw, peasant. I own the island where your mansion is, don't me angry, or I'll take it away.

So, For the last week I have used 3 (TBS) scoops of whole beans into the grinder and about 24 oz water in the machine (showing 4 ((cups?)) on the side of the machine).

Today I thought.. that I prob was making it too weak and doubled up... 6 scoops of beans to the same amount of water. This tastes more like I had at my brothers.. and now I feel a bit zippy laugh out loud

That's not a bad ratio. You can go a little higher if you like the strength.

Wait till you buy a scale to weigh the ground coffee... It'll go great with your hand crank burr grinder that's on your Amazon Christmas wishlist.

Just tried a Costa Rica Fair Trade roast that was recommended. Smooth as Butter, rich, zero bitterness. Made the best cup I had in years.
