Goodbye Keurig...I went to the dark side and now grind coffee beans

70,256 5,366 August 7, 2017 at 12:52 PM in Grocery (4)
I was out of town for a month and just couldn't get past the fact that you cannot clean the internal reservoir of a Keurig. Being the germaphobe that I am and allergic to mold..and ick...I couldn't get myself to use it again after it had been unplugged for so long Stick Out Tongue

I never really drank coffee when I drove a school bus (a cappuccino here or there doesn't count) in my book.

The Keurig made it simple, quick and clean.. no fuss no muss.

I had a reg coffee pot in the cupboard for when relatives came to town but I preferred my weak, sweet coffee pods.
Even some of the medications I have to take can cause acid re-flux issues so weaker coffee and not being dependent on it made sense... *also prone to migraines anyway.

Well, I spent 3 weeks with my brother and my sister stayed over most nights..and both drink coffee religiously..so yes, there I was drinking fresh ground organic coffee beans.. so it was fairly strong.
I know that if I don't wean off it slowly ..weaker and weaker I'll have one heck of a headache..so I gave in to the dark side and bought a bean grinder and organic beans laugh out loud

smh

I reuse the K-pod for my 2nd and 3rd cups...so it gets lighter and tapers me "down" bulb

This is the blade grinder I bought..sorry I'm not about to spend $80 - $100 on a burr grinder.
And bought the organic whole beans at costco

This is the burr grinder I have. It's not the best on the market by a long shot, BUT it does grind the beans consistently. My biggest headache is the static.

I also don't leave tons of beans in the hopper. Just enough for what I plan to make that day.

I have a CCC for it for and I got mine for $20 a while back. Even at $31, it's not a bad price.

I prefer a medium roast and slightly larger than medium grinds. It took a while to dial in my preferred flavor, but there you go.

I know someone who's a big coffee drinker, who got some as a present. Said he wasn't impressed.

Now Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, that's some gooooooood stuff.
I sincerely miss pure Blue Mountain from Jamaica. It was, quite frankly, AMAZING.

Unfortunately, from my understanding, Jamaica has made it illegal to sell 100% Blue Mountain outside of the country's borders.

There is a pretty good blend at Costco that is my go-to blend. That's the one I always tell my wife to buy. When they are out or if the Kona is on sale, then I go Kona, but otherwise, that Blue Mountain is the stuff!

Just curious where you got this understanding? I seem to see places claiming to sell it, and haven't found anything about it being illegal now, just increases in prices the farmers are receiving. Looks like even Starbucks was selling it this year, at $35/8oz it better be 100% JBM.

Now that Schooby is zipping around the SD office, I have a question, could use some help.

Our old burr grinder died and we need some recommendations on a good replacement. We bought an Eureka Grinder but the thing isn't designed well, we wind up with grinds everywhere, including some that get stuck in the slots for the portafilter holder (it has three positions) and a ton of coffee on the counter-top and stuck in the chute due to static electricity.

So which burr grinder do you recommend? Help

What's your budget? And what do you do with the beans after grinding? (French press, pot, pour over, aeropress, espresso, etc.)

I just googled Eureka grinder, wtf? $500? Shit, that's like double what I paid, and I thought I got an expensive grinder.

I have no useful advice at that price point.

Nah, she's out of my league with her $500-$1,500 Eureka Grinder.

It was just under $500 but I'd be happy with anything as long as it works well, our old grinder was IIRC $200.
