I have the black version of this and it works very well on USB3. Currently running with 2x8TB WD Red in JBOD mode and it go to sleep when the Alienware Alpha it's connected to sleep and wake up when the computer does.


The ventilation is badly thought out and there is no vent at the front. Right now I stack a couple of magnet at the latch so it prop the door open about 1/8 inch so the air can flow through.


Edit: I don't see the coupon anymore but $69.99 is 42% off and a very good price for this.

$69.99 is $50 off regular price. Even without the coupon, it's a very good price.

i bought one last night with the 20% coupon. the no front vents thing is a very serious issue, make sure you leave that front door cracked open.

These are great for the price. They do make your drives run on the hot side, but I still wouldn't risk putting a magnet anywhere near your hard drives. I do like the idea of propping the door open, so I might mess around with other options to do so. Your results may vary, but on my linux server, with 2 of these each holding 4 drives, USB just wouldn't work. Drives kept going undetected. I have had no issues with eSATA though, so keep that in mind if you have issues with USB. Addonics makes a good card for $40 that you can plug two of these into:

I have been using a black colored one for the past 15 months without any issues. It works well with USB and eSATA attached to a Windows PC. A worthwhile purchase.

For ventilation, I have put a small piece of thick cardboard at the bottom to keep the door from closing completely. The door can be taped using cello tape or the front of the unit kept propped up to keep the door from swinging open.

Don't worry. Inside every hard drive there is a much bigger and stronger magnet so these little magnets won't cause any trouble. They are at least 1 inch away from the front corner of the closest drive. The case already got a small magnet to keep the front door close so I just stack some more of those magnet disk to keep the door from closing completely.
