If you want to test your own ears, here's a randomized test that may help you decide if a high resolution audio player is right for you:

http://www.npr.org/sections/there...io-quality

I'm easily confused and didn't do too well. And I love music!
Our smartphones can't play high resolution audio. Because these became obsolete due to smartphones, they came up with High resolution audio to have the business back. Whether you want high resolution audio or not is up to you. When cassette walkmans were used apple came up with ipod/digital audio player that boasted high res audio for that time. Because smartphones replaced ipods, companies came up with high res audio player now a days to steal our money. It's all business.
Save your self some money and buy a dac+amp for around the same price that can plug into your phone and improve audio when needed and can be used with any phones you buy in the future. Most audio players suffer from unoptimized and slow software. Eventually it will be left in a box somewhere in your house and won't be used much. Trust me I have one.

Been forever looking for a well priced high res player. while the price on this is tempting, user experience as written up on Amazon reviews leave a lot to be desired, mostly on the software front

Hmm might have to look to see how it compares to my fiio x3 to see if this is worth as an upgrade or not. Anyone have experience with both?

I didn't see it mentioned but this also supports LDAC.

It also has a proprietary connection which is the primary reason I haven't purchased this yet.

Check out the Activo CT10. Just started selling in the US. It is a collaboration between Groovers Japan, iriver and Astell & Kern. $299 and had the same android based interface at the AK flagship. It's available on Amazon and their website us.activostyle.com.

One of the Amazon reviewers mentioned that the player comes with a proprietary cable and not USB.

I got a fairly thin silicone case and screen protector combo on Amazon. The case fits well and will protect from scratches and minor impacts, but I don't think it will help with a six-foot fall onto a hard surface. I don't remember the brand, but there were so few cases, it won't be hard to find. Amazon also had replacement cables for about $9 as I remember, but I bought the Sony to replace my original Zune, which also has a custom cable, and the cable that came with it still works perfectly, so I am not going to worry about a cable for the Sony until the original fails.

I have this player: the music player end is proprietary and the other end is standard USB.

I hated the Fiio X3. Felt like my $85 smartphone sounded better. Plus the menus and navigation were laborious. Apparently this Sony can't create playlists unless you plug into a computer. That's a dealbreaker for me.
