I bought these a couple months ago for about $16 and I just got an email from the seller letting me know that they were running a promotion.

Was happy with mine, just bought couple more 4 packs for $10 each.

Enjoy.

  • MADE IN USA – All of our weights are Proudly Hand Made in the USA and Assembled by our small fermenting company in Boston, MA!
  • SAFE MATERIALS – Our fermentation weights are made from the highest quality 100% soda-lime, lead-free, food safe glass in the USA! We use the same glass used to make mason jars. No more worrying about contaminates or other substances leaching into your ferment. Each weight has a beautiful polished look.
  • DURABLE AND HEAVY – These are the heaviest weights available on the market! Each weight is 6.2 ounces with a diameter of 2.5" and a thickness of 0.75". These will keep your ferments completely submerged underneath your brine eliminating oxygen exposure. Their size allows for very easy placement in and out of your jar!

If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

To keep your fermenting veggies (or whatever) in the brine and away from oxygen. Though a cabbage leaf works almost as well.

It's for weighing down whatever food you are trying to ferment, so it stays below the water line. A real common and easy food to ferment at home is saurkraut.

Ive always used non bleached parchment paper to push down veggies. Anytime the veggies want to float up, the crumpled up parchment paper presses against the lid and holds the veggies submerged under the brine. Never had any mold or yeast issues.

Can't one just vacuum the jar?

During the fermentation process, the food needs to "breathe", or rather exhale primarily carbon dioxide. If you seal the jar, you have risk of it blowing up during the process! You can ferment just about any food too. It's fun to do.
