pilot holes, ALWAYS pilot holes for lags...
you should be able to drive lags into 2x material with a ratchet, by hand, if you've drilled the proper size pilot hole. if you're just driving them in blind with an impact, you're hurting the wood and compromising the integrity of your joist.

It's not that hard, but better to have a spotter at times. I had a cousin come down there install my 4x8 overhead. One tip, make sure you have joists in the area where you are planning to hang the shelf

My install was pretty easy with the exception of finding garage ceiling joists through the drywall (my issue), and one step that has you space out the the L shaped ceiling support brackets, I wasn't sure if the measurement in the manual for front to back spacing between the brackets was for the edge of the part that is flush with the ceiling, or for the L side that hangs down a bit. Whichever one I used was the wrong one, and my hanging brackets were slightly wider on the ceiling than they were at the shelf. Since I put two shelves on one rack, I had to redo this part which took extra time.

If I remember correctly, the 48 1/2" / 96 1/2" figure they give for between the brackets is for the parts that the vertical bars bolt to, not the part of the ceiling bracket that bolts to the ceiling. I could only figure this out by building it on the ground and measuring it, nowhere in their instructions or on their YouTube video is it mentioned.
