This a 'Thunderbolt 2 to ethernet adapter', and uses a mini Display Port connector for Thunderbolt, which is present on only pre-2016 MacBook Pros.
Thunderbolt 3, the latest version present in 2016+ MacBook Pros, uses a USB-C connector.
Neither the product name nor the photo makes this clear. They did not even bother to show a 'head-on' photo of the connector. They only show the top-view which looks the same for both connectors.
In order to connect an Ethernet cable into a 2016+ Laptop you have to daisy-chain a 'TB 3 to TB 2' adapter and this 'TB2 to Ethernet' adapter. That's crazy! And third-party USB-C adapters are notoriously unreliable, with some even toasting the motherboards in Mac laptops.
Apple really screwed up the USB-C adapter situation. If they do not want to manufacture USB-C adapters, they should at least have a licensing program like MFi for USB-C adapters so we can be sure that third-party adapters are safe to use.

Just got my son a MacBook to take to college, and I know less than nothing about the differences between their accessories: Tbird vs Tbird2 vs Tbird3.
