they are always around this money on Ebay, this if for older macs so not in much demand right now. Last one I bought was for about $13. They work fine to use it with VMware ESX on the mac minis

but eBay can be full of fakes, while this is coming straight from Target, authorized to sell Apple products.

TU to the OP for the deal, TD to Apple and Target for the poor/misleading product description.

This a 'Thunderbolt 2 to ethernet adapter', and uses a mini Display Port connector for Thunderbolt, which is present on only pre-2016 MacBook Pros.

Thunderbolt 3, the latest version present in 2016+ MacBook Pros, uses a USB-C connector.

Neither the product name nor the photo makes this clear. They did not even bother to show a 'head-on' photo of the connector. They only show the top-view which looks the same for both connectors.

In order to connect an Ethernet cable into a 2016+ Laptop you have to daisy-chain a 'TB 3 to TB 2' adapter and this 'TB2 to Ethernet' adapter. That's crazy! And third-party USB-C adapters are notoriously unreliable, with some even toasting the motherboards in Mac laptops.

Apple really screwed up the USB-C adapter situation. If they do not want to manufacture USB-C adapters, they should at least have a licensing program like MFi for USB-C adapters so we can be sure that third-party adapters are safe to use.

TU for the research, i was thinking this would be compatible with my newer macbook retina.

Edit: even the Apple website is vague. https://www.apple.com/shop/produc...et-adapter

Thank you!! for explaining all that.

Just got my son a MacBook to take to college, and I know less than nothing about the differences between their accessories: Tbird vs Tbird2 vs Tbird3.

He would appreciate an adapter like this ($36) [amazon.com] or this ($45) [amazon.com], depending on his connectivity needs. These would eliminate the need for individual adapters and they are not much bigger. Anker's products are highly regarded and come with excellent customer service.
