This is the link to check the port status of a number to AT&T if you're attempting to transfer a number: https://www.att.com/port/lnpEntryWeb.do (slickdeals may mangle the URL, causing the page to fail to load. edit it in your location bar to remove everything after ".do")
Here's the link to activate a prepaid SIM. My attempt to activate stated the SIM was already activated: https://www.att.com/prepaid/activ...ivate.h
Helpful Numbers:
AT&T Prepaid customer service (800) 901-9878
This is the process when porting in an existing number (I have done it twice now):
1) Insert new SIM in phone
2) Activate the sim online at att.com/activateprepaid (enter your number you are porting, the SIM ICCID, and your zip code)
3) The activation should succeed, and it will tell you to click a button to Manage your Account. Click it.
4) Manage Account will bring you to www.paygonline.
5) Finish your port in by calling ATT. Follow these instructions:
Just in case you encounter the deadlock of robot chatting when activate your account.
call 877-426-0525 Have you already started to activate your number? answer: yes Do you have a phone number? answer: yes (if porting) Tell them the number you are porting. You will likely have to do it 3 times, as they won't find it in their system. [edit 10-05-2019] I had to answer 'no" to having a number eventhough I was porting because if I answered "yes", then after I gave the robo-assistant my "to port" number it would say that I'd have to call customer service and kick me out. Saying "no" would continue as this guide outlines. [end of edit 10-05-2019] Is this for a mobile phone? answer: yes Do you have the box the device came in? answer: yes (assuming you have the sim card with the iccid) Do you have iccid? answer:yes They may say that SIM card is already activated. Do you already have an account? answer:yes !!! Then you will be connected to a real person. Note: if you make a mistake and say you do not already have an account, they will tell you that you need to go get a new SIM from an AT&T store. That is not true. Call back and go through the process again and make sure to say you have an account. The human will help finish the port and activate your account. |
7) At this point, you just need to add $300 to your account, and your service will be active. You can either a) give the agent your credit card number OR prepaid card PINs, b) log into paygonline.com and provide your credit card or prepaid card PINS, or c) wait for the charge to go through on the credit card you submitted when initially ordering online.
My first time, I tried option c, trying to avoid being double charged - but it never happened. I waited over 12 hours before finally calling in and providing my credit card. I have not been double charged.
My second time, I did option b and entered prepaid card PINs at paygonline.com. As soon as my balance reached $300, my service was active.
Some links in case they're of any help.
To activate a prepaid SIM- https://www.att.com/prepaid/activ...ivate.h Mine said it was activated but I couldn't call 611 for customer service on the device and I couldn't log into the account post activation screen. Had to wait till wife came home with her phone to call support. Credit card only showed a charge for $5 sim at this time. This is to check the progress of a number being ported to ATT- https://www.att.com/port/lnpEntryWeb.do Mine now says "completed" but before and during activation it stated "confirmed" I believe. I entered the number to port during original checkout and I checked my old carriers website and it showed the number had been deactivated and service canceled yesterday. ATT Chat told me service / SIM was activated and to wait 45 minutes, power cycle phone, and all should be good. Still couldn't call 611 or any numbers on device an hour later. When I did finally get CSR on wifey's phone I told CSR I had activated the line on the SIM/IMCI with the link above and it was successful, I was porting a number, old carrier showed line was deactivated / disconnected, and then relayed to CSR whatever the "port status" link showed above. She put me on hold, told me the port was still processing but she would push it, hold again, and she returned saying the port was done and I'd need to pay the $300 (plus taxes) to get service activated. Gave her CC info and shortly afterwards did a test call with my phone and verified data was operational. Ironically I avoided the Target card fiasco because I though it would add an opportunity for error but if I had the cards when she asked for payment I probably could have just read the numbers off. And as I typed this I received a 2nd notification of payment text and my credit card has two $328 pending charges from AT&T... #facepalm |

I activated my SIM, verified my number was ported successfully, and it won't let me add prepaids to my account because "no prepaid exists with that phone number". Really hate AT&T's website, I'm giving them about 24 hours before I say fark it and re-up with T-Mobile. Super disappointed at how clunky/outdated their website is, and their lack of online chat support unless you pay for it is... well, outdated.
Then they tell me I need to get a refund since they charged me the $300 when I activated, and go to an AT&T store to get a new SIM so I don't have to buy a new one. Drive there, get a SIM, get home and LOW AND BEHOLD - I CAN'T ACTIVATE THE MFing thing. Chatting with them - now I have to call and request a refund of the SIM they screwed up on, order a new one (hoping to god they don't screw that up), and wasted a trip to an AT&T store.
I should have known better.....

While ordering online, I got an error saying number cannot be transferred. I called AT&T Prepaid customer service (800) 901-9878 . It looks like they are aware of online issues. The agent was ready to setup account and port over the phone. However, he needed a SIM card which I didn't have. So the next day I got the AT&T prepaid SIM card from Walmart (cost $10). I again called customer service number but this time got a different agent who said the promo is a online only and wont be able to apply over phone. I called the number again, got a new agent who was able to help. He setup my account and initiated the port. He mentioned that I need to pay $300 upfront. When i asked if I could buy refill cards and pay next day, he was ok with it. The port was confirmed in about 30 mins (Link: https://www.att.com/port/lnpEntryWeb.do)
Thanks to OP for sharing this deal and everyone for sharing their experiences! This is a very helpful forum!
Edit: I did not give my credit card to ATT in the whole process. While filling online form, I got message saying my H2O number cannot be transferred, so I did not submit. Everything was done over phone with customer service.
My question for you is, do you think if I can go ahead sign up the prepaid account with ATT and buy the prepaid card (from Sam's) and load them to the account now and wait until next week and I call them to start the porting number over
Thank you

=============
note sometimes
For ANDROID if you can't send text messages with images and you are manually setting the APN parameters, the problem is caused because your keyboard adds a space after a comma. What should be APN Type - default, supl, mms is entered as APN Type - default, supl, mms See the difference? You have to delete the space that is automatically entered after the comma! Presto! Problem fixed!!
As I understand it though, we can have this rate for as long as they feel like giving it to us, which means next year, if it's still available, we could theoretically renew for another year. I think this is the more likely scenario since we're locked in, unless we choose to unlock ourselves and go for that $40/$50 you mention.
My gut feeling tells me they'll let people that signed up for it renew. Anyone who never signed up is obviously locked out of this promotion.
