There is no "regular". This is the Made In Mexico (MIM) Fender strat. It's the lowest tier within the Fender brand. This is the "cheap Fender". This does not mean it's bad, just that if you want a Fender-branded stratocaster, this is their lowest prices tier. The previous version was called the Standard. There was a MIM Standard and an American Standard, so that caused confusion. This is a step up from the previous version. Big changes are the alnico5 pickups and 22 frets instead of 21.
They can't advertise black at this price. Try calling them. They may be able to, may not. Note "advertise" and "sell for" are not the same. Fender puts restrictions on how much they can advertise them for. Since this is a "limited edition", they don't have the same restrictions. Make no mistake though, "limited edition" means "different color".
So the only "issue" here is Adorama "big enough" to have their own Limited Edition line? Doesn't seem like it as they have to liquidate the excessive stock of their special color.
I mean they are a camera store, so most folks looking for guitars might not think of them first.
Lake Placid Blue has stood the test of time. However, it's not as popular as other colors, so Fender doesn't produce this guitar in this color except for Adorama. They do have other guitars in Lake Placid Blue, so it's just sending different paint cans to Mexico. There is nothing better or worse about this guitar than anything else in the Player series. Same guitar, different color.
And screw OP for posting this. I didn't order one last week and gave in on Sat to order, but it had expired. Now, I'm having the same inner argument. Dammit.
I bought my Am Deluxe Strat Plus from Adorama about 3 years ago when those babies were like half price.
Adorama, Fender.... Take my money.
