I just hear horrorstories about Netgear and TP-Link....
I want a good cover of my house (so the bigger the range the better), good speed and reliability. I'm sure most ppl want that tho..
But anyway.. I probably would want ddwrt or openwrt (have some experience with the former, but it's been years as it is)...

For bigger range, you can use a mesh system. I've heard about the R7800 R8000P has a great coverage range among WiFi 5 routers. For WiFi 6 routers, you should buy RAX75 and above models. The RAX75 is currently $199 in Costco. Also the Asus RT-AX58U and above have good coverage.

I have been using TP-LINK| TL-WDR3600 since 2014 with DD-WRT. Completely stable setup and covers 3500 sq.ft.
Client about 30 feet away and 2 walls apart. FIOS is around 300mpbs. Network drivers are latest available from Intel.
Router 5Ghz performance is flakey at best. When router first boots, I'm getting 300/300 on 5Ghz. After 30 minutes speed ranges from 2 to 50 mpbs. Not a typo. 2 mpbs. 2.4 GHz is around 100/100 (max available on 2.4 GHz).
My R7000 router from a couple of years ago gives 250/300 on 5Ghz (WiFi 5) consistently.
In summary, don't waste your time getting either router at this time. These two are going back to Walmart and Costco respectively.

What you are describing is an issue in some of the RAX models firmware when you're on a DFS frequency (Channel 52-148) and it detects Radar singals. Picking a channel outside of that range avoids the problem entirely.
