Wow, the models are hard to determine differences... here's what I could find... I'm not guaranteeing accuracy, and there may be differences I'm not seeing, but here's a starting point:

All are 25.5" scale, basswood body, 12"-16" compound radius, 22 jumbo frets, Floyd Rose Special bridge with R2 locking nut, single volume and tone controls with 3-way toggle switch, truss rod adjustment at base of neck via a spoke wheel.

$379 -- basic bottom end --
$399 -- adds quilted maple top -- maybe adds body binding.. not listed in specs
$399 #2 -- color?
$399 #3 -- quited maple in zilla burst and body binding
$399 #4 -- color and Exposed Basswood to Simulate Natural Wood Binding on Transparent Colors
$399 #5 -- lefties get love. Looks like #4 in left.
$599 -- first mention of quartersawn neck. Tuna-matic bridge, locking gotoh tuners
$649 -- quartersawn maple neck, back to floyd rose bridge and nut with D-tuna, 500k bourns volume pot 250 bourns tone pot
$749 -- same as $649 with bumble-bee style paint job
$749 -- zebra humbuckers and natrual finish.
$849 -- made in Mexico and photo makes it appear to be an arched top, but no mention of it on Adorama's specs.
$1049 -- black and white stripes -- first mention of alnico-2 pickups, chrome hardware. Still bassword body.

I've been watching prices on these for awhile, $649 for the Wolfgang Special is pretty slick!

Agreed, but I've seen others at this price possibly because new models are coming out.

None of these. The higher end of these (Specials) are MIM, most of the others in Indonesia.

EVH has awesome necks and i love the thumbwheel truss rod adjustment, I have a white/black striped, only gripe i found is every one I tried in store had sharp fret ends, i bought it a few years ago so perhaps the mexican factory has addressed it by now but be prepared to do a little fret work.

I traded an unused tube amp for a 2012 MIC Wolfgang Special and HSC (which is super snazzy) a few years ago. Can't find out anything about what it originally sold for because it seems to have gone through many manufacture locations and there's nothing currently similar.

It's not a bad axe. Pretty sure I got the better end of the deal. I have odd hands - large palms, short fingers (unlike guys who have paws with loooooooong fingers like the Alien Facehugger) - and certain neck shapes are better for me than others. The Wolf is rounder and narrower than my vintage Eighties shred machines, but those are nearly irreplaceable due to hoarders depleting the supply (got mine in the Nineties when grunge made that type of axe worthless), so I take the Wolf out on gigs.

How does the quality of these compare to a similarly priced Fender, Epiphone, Ibanez? Similar or are these effectively signature models with associated premium cost?

There is something funny going on with the pricing they are showing. Outside of the direct link, the EVH Wolfgang Special Black with Yellow Stripes shows a regular price of $1599. Elsewhere on their site it shows $899 which is the same regular price at GC/MF. They have been showing their regular prices s the same as GC/MF. I hope this is a fluke and not a change in how they are going to show their sale prices.

I noticed that. The special with stripes goes for $899 to $999 at other shops. So their list price is way inflated. But $749 is a good price for the guitar if you were looking for one. Not sure it's worth it as an impulse buy

EVH is made by Fender. You're paying a bit of a premium for Eddie's name, but otherwise, they may as well say "Fender" on the headstock.
