I started out with a cheap flat antenna and I wasnt happy with it, I am 26 miles from most of the broadcast towers in my area. I tried 3 different flat antennas and they all performed about the same. With the flat antenna I could get 25 channels but reception was not consistent and would often stutter. I finally decided to try mounting a large ge pro yagi style antenna in my attic. I wish I would have started with that, it found 56 channels, has a much better picture and so far (2 months) has been 100% reliable.
Moral of the story, unless you're close to broadcast towers dont waste your time with the flat antennas.
Also, unlike what it says on Amazon website, most USB 3 external hard drives are compatible with it. I easily added a one I had laying around to increase my storage to 3TB.

Just curious, of those 56 channels that you get, how many are repeat channels? I currently use YouTube TV, but the thought of cutting the cord all together sounds pretty attractive....
I just looked bc I only really care about 5 or 6 ota channels so I never paid attention. I'm close to Columbus, OH and it looks like I have about 8 repeat channels, a handful of foreign language channels, and a bunch of channels I've never heard of such as laff and justice but they look mildly entertaining. I personally wouldn't be content with only ota channels.

I put a "real" antennae in my attic, and wired the Recast to my router. I instantly picked up 50+ channels, with a few fine tuning antennae turns, I now get 62.
Sure some of them are shopping. religious or sub channels of networks, but I clearly get the major networks. Those are the ones we use to record the sitcoms, news and most (if they ever come back) golf tournaments. You can also ignore channels you don't want.
Just like my old ($40 per month just for equipment) cable DVR, I get to 30 second skip my way through commercials, That is probably the best feature for me of any DVR. That, and the ability to pause live TV
The channel guide is just like the cable one, and most importantly It's FREE. It also lists the couple hundred PLUTO channels and sometimes I find myself channel surfing like it's 1999.
Although it's not happened recently, I used to experience buffering issues, I don't know if Amazon updated or something, but for the most part viewing has been flawless.
Personally, I can't discern the 720 from 4K content on my 65 incher, but I guess some people are more perceptive.
Now my Firestick remote does everything, from OTA, recordings, Netflix, Disney, YouTube, Cinema HD, Internet Surfing and about 3,000 other options I'll never use.
I recommend the Recast. This is about the price I paid.
