Hey everyone, I bought this over a month ago with the colder weather coming, and I just hit my 100th ride this week so I've become pretty used to the system. I've posted this in similar threads to this and people have found it helpful, so here's my how-to Peloton guide that tells you what you need.

Required items you'll need:

Echelon bike [walmart.com]
Peloton app [onepeloton.com]
Peloton subscription (Note, if you have a friend who has a bike subscription you can ask if they'll create an account for you instead to save some money)
Two streaming devices
One to connect to the Echelon app [echelonfit.com] to display your statistics, usually a phone
One to connect to the Peloton app to display the classes, usually a tablet

Optional add-ons to improve the experience

Wahoo cadence sensor [amazon.com] - iOS support only - this attaches to your bike's gearshaft and can be connected to the Peloton app to integrate your cadence. You'll already be getting cadence information from the Echelon app on your phone, but if you want it to display in the Peloton app, you'll need this too.

Polar OH1+ heart rate sensor [amazon.com] - this wraps around your arm and can provide heart rate data to the Peloton app. Instructors will mention heart rate zones to target in advanced classes, so if you want to be able to follow along you'll need this, but it's not required. You will also get more accurate calorie burn counts with your heart rate being measured.

Note: If you are an iOS user and have an Apple Watch, you have a couple options instead of buying a sensor.

Use Peloton app on your iPhone. If you use your iPhone for displaying the class, it will have direct access to your heart rate from your Apple Watch.

Download HeartCast [apple.com] which allows your Apple Watch to broadcast heart rate over bluetooth. You can pair this with your iPad/Android tablet.

Bicycle mat [amazon.com] - The official Echelon mat is 27"x47", so this should fit underneath it to catch your sweat and protect your carpet/hardwood floor.
1-3lb dumbbells [amazon.com] - In some classes, the instructor will tell you to do some lifts, so you'll need a set of light weights
Peloton to Echelon resistance chart [etsy.com] - The instructor will call out numbers to change your bicycle resistance during the class, but the Echelon uses a different scale so you can print this out or buy one to have as a handy reference.
Gel bicycle seat cover [amazon.com] - If you are gonna be spinning for a long time, the gel will help ease any pain you have in your backside

To get the baseline experience done, you'll need to setup your Echelon bike as described in the manual. After physical setup is complete, download the Echelon app to your phone, and then plug in your bike and start the pairing process.

Next, if you bought either of the optional sensors you'll need to pair them with your ipad/android tablet.

Once paired, to get your Echelon app into freestyle mode to display your statistics, go to the bottom right of the app, select "More", then "Freestyle Ride".

Finally, you will then be able to load the Peloton app on your tablet, select a class, and start going.

Thanks, picked one up.

Don't forget Chase Freedom has Walmart as one of the 5% categories this quarter!

You have to pay for the Peloton app correct? My wife wants me to buy her one of these Peloton type bikes and I'm trying to understand the pros and cons. The one review said the only bike that was "open source" allowing you to use any app was the Bowflex but this is half the price.

Personally I figure I will be watching the bike sit in the corner for six months then I will sell it on Craigslist but maybe I'm wrong.

No you do not. Cadence, output and resistance is displayed on your phone. You do need an iPad/second display to run the Peloton app. The Wahoo cadence is helpful to have though because it is displayed on the iPad screen, that way you don't have to look down at your phone.
FYI peloton will no longer support cadence sensor for the app after 06/2021 I believe.

I'm personally holding out for the Sunny (SF-B1805). Was still in research mode when Amazon had it on sale last week, so missed out and now I'm kicking myself (getting my bike-less cardio in laugh out loud). I was hoping it would come back for Prime Day, but no such luck yet. Here's hoping for a Black Friday deal...

These are very close, but I believe Sunny gives the best true "DIY" experience and has slightly better specs than the Echelon.
The sunny bike doesn't show resistance which is important for matching peleton classes

Hmmm.... Should I consider something like this or hold off for a Concept2 BikeErg? I have the Model D rower coming next week, but Im thinking a bike might be nice to have too for some faster paced cardio. Or perhaps I should consider a Rogue Assault Bike... Those seem to be recommended pretty often.

You also have the option for the inspire bike at costco as well. You can get a pick it up instead of hoping your bike ships

Really? Do you have a source? It would make sense from Pelotons stand point as all these DIY set ups take away from buying their bike and IMO provide 90% of the benefits at 25% of the price.

Edit. Nm...I found this article. https://www.pelobuddy.com/peloton...gital-ios/. Looks like they removed the message but here it is below. it would be really annoying if they did it.

" Please note: beginning 10/13/2020, the Bluetooth cadence sensor capability will have limited support. Peloton Members who joined on, or prior to 10/13/20, will be supported temporarily until 6/30/2021. Members who joined after this date will not have this functionality."

Heads up, this bike only has a 15lb flywheel. Won't match the feel of a Peloton.

I got the Sunny a few days ago and its pretty solid. The fly wheel is heavy even on a zero resistance. Feels like its the best bike without any electrical components.

I was in the same boat. Wife wanted a Peloton but I couldn't justify the cost plus paying $40 for the Peloton plan if you have the bike vs $14 just for the app. So I bought this one and it's been fantastic. We use a tablet to get the cadence and resistance and we project the Peloton classes on our wall and it's been working great.

once the flywheel is moving what will be different other than stored energy behind a heavy flywheel?
Moving at a set cadence and applied resistance I couldn't imagine how one could tell the difference between a 15lb flywheel to a 50lb flywheel

I'm looking into getting a spin bike but am overwhelmed with the options. What makes this bike better for replicating a Peloton (with the app) over other magnetic resistance bikes that are cheaper?

This is half the price of Echelon's own EX-3 model. Which I of course just got. If there is any difference in quality or specs between them though?

Only difference I can see is that the EX-3 has pedals that allow for either regular sneakers (like the Sport does) or clip-ons (which the Sport does not). If you are not planning to get clip-ons, that makes no difference though.

built in bluetooth that measures both cadence and resistance.
You can replicate cadence with added sensors but the ability to dial in resistance is important to most people..not to say you can use ANY bike and take the same peloton classes it just makes it more difficult to try to match what the instructor is driving you to do.
what I think is important is getting a good solid bike that has all the creature comforts you would want to make the workout beneficial for you and not end up being a coat rack
