Hey everyone, I bought this over a month ago with the colder weather coming, and I just hit my 100th ride this week so I've become pretty used to the system. I've posted this in similar threads to this and people have found it helpful, so here's my how-to Peloton guide that tells you what you need.

Required items you'll need:

Echelon bike [walmart.com]
Peloton app [onepeloton.com]
Peloton subscription (Note, if you have a friend who has a bike subscription you can ask if they'll create an account for you instead to save some money)
Two streaming devices
One to connect to the Echelon app [echelonfit.com] to display your statistics, usually a phone
One to connect to the Peloton app to display the classes, usually a tablet

Optional add-ons to improve the experience

Wahoo cadence sensor [amazon.com] - iOS support only - this attaches to your bike's gearshaft and can be connected to the Peloton app to integrate your cadence. You'll already be getting cadence information from the Echelon app on your phone, but if you want it to display in the Peloton app, you'll need this too.

Polar OH1+ heart rate sensor [amazon.com] - this wraps around your arm and can provide heart rate data to the Peloton app. Instructors will mention heart rate zones to target in advanced classes, so if you want to be able to follow along you'll need this, but it's not required. You will also get more accurate calorie burn counts with your heart rate being measured.

Note: If you are an iOS user and have an Apple Watch, you have a couple options instead of buying a sensor.

Use Peloton app on your iPhone. If you use your iPhone for displaying the class, it will have direct access to your heart rate from your Apple Watch.

Download HeartCast [apple.com] which allows your Apple Watch to broadcast heart rate over bluetooth. You can pair this with your iPad/Android tablet.

Bicycle mat [amazon.com] - The official Echelon mat is 27"x47", so this should fit underneath it to catch your sweat and protect your carpet/hardwood floor.
1-3lb dumbbells [amazon.com] - In some classes, the instructor will tell you to do some lifts, so you'll need a set of light weights
Peloton to Echelon resistance chart [etsy.com] - The instructor will call out numbers to change your bicycle resistance during the class, but the Echelon uses a different scale so you can print this out or buy one to have as a handy reference.
Gel bicycle seat cover [amazon.com] - If you are gonna be spinning for a long time, the gel will help ease any pain you have in your backside

To get the baseline experience done, you'll need to setup your Echelon bike as described in the manual. After physical setup is complete, download the Echelon app to your phone, and then plug in your bike and start the pairing process.

Next, if you bought either of the optional sensors you'll need to pair them with your ipad/android tablet.

Once paired, to get your Echelon app into freestyle mode to display your statistics, go to the bottom right of the app, select "More", then "Freestyle Ride".

Finally, you will then be able to load the Peloton app on your tablet, select a class, and start going.

Thanks, picked one up.

Don't forget Chase Freedom has Walmart as one of the 5% categories this quarter!

You have to pay for the Peloton app correct? My wife wants me to buy her one of these Peloton type bikes and I'm trying to understand the pros and cons. The one review said the only bike that was "open source" allowing you to use any app was the Bowflex but this is half the price.

Personally I figure I will be watching the bike sit in the corner for six months then I will sell it on Craigslist but maybe I'm wrong.

Purchased Sunday & arrive Wednesday. Tried it out today & loved it, exactly what I needed to get back to being active.

iOS let me down the app but said I can only sign in, so I created account online then no problem. I didn't pay attention after entering serial number in app and just jumped to freestyle ride.
To get the 180 day trial, I went back to the browser and completed my profile and it has plan details that include trial for the purchase. I chose $699, but a tip - use a prepaid gc that has a few cents or may work if empty also. That way if you forget to cancel oh well. I don't think they run the authorization, and everything shows fine in my account. (I do the same with other trial subs)

You use the Peloton Digital app. It has nothing to do with a friend. You just sign up yourself - no referral is needed.

It doesn't need to use the peloton bike?
Of course not. Notice you are in an Echelon bike slickdeal. If you want a Peloton bike, then spend a lot more money and pay $40/mo for the Peloton subscription for use with their bike. In this thread, we are saving money.

It was supposed to arrive in 2 days, but it took 3 days, and it was delivered next door. I can live with that as long as the bike doesn't have any problems as some people are reporting with noise, pedals, bluetooth, and resistance.

I find that every time I select an activity I have to add my equipment (bike) again. Is this normal?

If my bike is in front of a big screen TV, does it make sense if using free Echelon subscription to cast class to tv, and if using Peloton app , this is available on Fire TV and Chromecast TV, so I would have phone on rack of bike and Peloton app on TV . When doing classes, its not like people are watching TV at same time
I tried casting the entire screen of my 10" Lenovo Android tablet to a Chromecast that is attached to our living room TV. Note that full Android screen casting [zendesk.com] is the only way to cast the content of the Echelon app, as the app itself doesn't support native casting. However, the quality isn't good. The video and audio stutter often, so I went back to just using the tablet itself without any casting.

No. I fell into that trap at first, too, and now I have two duplicate entries under "My Equipment" that I am unable to remove. You should be able to just start the activity, then there may be a red banner at the top asking you to connect your equipment. If you tap it, it should show a list of devices it found. If it doesn't work, restart your phone/tablet and try again. It's finicky at times.

PSA: I got this gel cushion here, which is a pretty good fit (you must tie the string with a bit of force for a snug fit). Makes the seat a bit softer and protects it from the planned daily use.

Just 7 bucks.

Thank you.

Yes, my friend has the standalone bike and added me to his account. I access the app through my iPad and pay no monthly fee.

I believe with the digital subscription , you can only have one profile (the $13.99 one) - however with the $40 subscription (if you own a Peloton bike) you can have up to 3 simultaneous streams and unlimited profiles? Is this correct?
If you just have a digital subscription, it's just you.

If you have a $40 subscription, I believe it's 5 or 6 total accounts.

One more question (since I just got mine setup today): how do I track my activity in the Echelon app while doing a Pelaton ride?

You need two separate devices, as described here.

Maybe I'll just ask my sister for her Peloton. That is native on Chromecast w GTV

I think you are misunderstanding. I was asking if a friend had a peloton subscription, they can add me for no cost and I can use the peloton app on this bike. So, saving even more money Smilie since there would be no $14 a month fee. Purplestove had mentioned being able to be on a friend's (with bike) account and be able to use the standalone app. Since I have a friend that has the bike, maybe I can get on it. I have zero desire to buy a peloton, but from what I understand their classes are pretty good.

Exactly what I did. I absolutely love the instructors and I actually would be willing to pay the $13/mo. However, not having to is...nice. 😀
