Hey everyone, I bought this over a month ago with the colder weather coming, and I just hit my 100th ride this week so I've become pretty used to the system. I've posted this in similar threads to this and people have found it helpful, so here's my how-to Peloton guide that tells you what you need.

Required items you'll need:

Echelon bike [walmart.com]
Peloton app [onepeloton.com]
Peloton subscription (Note, if you have a friend who has a bike subscription you can ask if they'll create an account for you instead to save some money)
Two streaming devices
One to connect to the Echelon app [echelonfit.com] to display your statistics, usually a phone
One to connect to the Peloton app to display the classes, usually a tablet

Optional add-ons to improve the experience

Wahoo cadence sensor [amazon.com] - iOS support only - this attaches to your bike's gearshaft and can be connected to the Peloton app to integrate your cadence. You'll already be getting cadence information from the Echelon app on your phone, but if you want it to display in the Peloton app, you'll need this too.

Polar OH1+ heart rate sensor [amazon.com] - this wraps around your arm and can provide heart rate data to the Peloton app. Instructors will mention heart rate zones to target in advanced classes, so if you want to be able to follow along you'll need this, but it's not required. You will also get more accurate calorie burn counts with your heart rate being measured.

Note: If you are an iOS user and have an Apple Watch, you have a couple options instead of buying a sensor.

Use Peloton app on your iPhone. If you use your iPhone for displaying the class, it will have direct access to your heart rate from your Apple Watch.

Download HeartCast [apple.com] which allows your Apple Watch to broadcast heart rate over bluetooth. You can pair this with your iPad/Android tablet.

Bicycle mat [amazon.com] - The official Echelon mat is 27"x47", so this should fit underneath it to catch your sweat and protect your carpet/hardwood floor.
1-3lb dumbbells [amazon.com] - In some classes, the instructor will tell you to do some lifts, so you'll need a set of light weights
Peloton to Echelon resistance chart [etsy.com] - The instructor will call out numbers to change your bicycle resistance during the class, but the Echelon uses a different scale so you can print this out or buy one to have as a handy reference.
Gel bicycle seat cover [amazon.com] - If you are gonna be spinning for a long time, the gel will help ease any pain you have in your backside

To get the baseline experience done, you'll need to setup your Echelon bike as described in the manual. After physical setup is complete, download the Echelon app to your phone, and then plug in your bike and start the pairing process.

Next, if you bought either of the optional sensors you'll need to pair them with your ipad/android tablet.

Once paired, to get your Echelon app into freestyle mode to display your statistics, go to the bottom right of the app, select "More", then "Freestyle Ride".

Finally, you will then be able to load the Peloton app on your tablet, select a class, and start going.

Thanks, picked one up.

Don't forget Chase Freedom has Walmart as one of the 5% categories this quarter!

You have to pay for the Peloton app correct? My wife wants me to buy her one of these Peloton type bikes and I'm trying to understand the pros and cons. The one review said the only bike that was "open source" allowing you to use any app was the Bowflex but this is half the price.

Personally I figure I will be watching the bike sit in the corner for six months then I will sell it on Craigslist but maybe I'm wrong.

Any word on if/when Amazon will have the $500 version available again? Assuming it will just have a new name.

The mat also functions to collect sweat during use. I don't think you want to be dripping sweat onto hardwood floors.

I'm also curious on the best value mat, I just bought the first one I saw on Amazon at $30 without research and think I overpaid. I'll return it if there are recommended ones.

I bought this for $17.99

So do you need to have the subscription to use the app to see the speed, cadence etc over the Bluetooth?
No. You just need to setup an account on Echelon. You can skip the part where you sign up for a subscription.

Came on to reply to this since I was in the same boat. Originally bought an Echelon from Walmart but cancelled my order and stuck it out for 2 months on the Concept 2 waitlist. Bike erg arrived yesterday and it is glorious. I rode for 20 minute this morning with Zwift and I can tell this is going to be a daily practice. My advice would be to get the Erg: excellent build quality, excellent durability and warranty, great resale value, Zwift. Good luck!

No, your friend is wrong. The Sport absolutely has bluetooth and uses it to connect to the Freestyle app to display your reatlime metrics from the bike including resistance reading, cadence, and power output watts. The bike has no built-in display, and it requires internet access to use the freestyle app, even though there is no subscription fee. The EX3 has SPD clip pedals and a heavier flywheel among some other differences, but I don't see value being that much higher.

Also, flywheel weight can easily be compensated for by gearing it to rotate at a higher speed so that the momentum of a lighter flywheel can equal that of a smaller one.
I have the app, can I get the freestyle session if without a subscription (EX-3)? I had the free month, but $40/month is steep. My wife is paying $15 for the Pelaton app, maybe I can use the freestyle on the Echelon and use the Pelaton to get my cycle on.

Your thoughts?

this is how alot of people are using the echelon bike..Freestyle app is free...you do not need to pay for the echelon app to access it..you can then use the peleton digital on another device, cast it or whatever and use free style for your cadence and resistance..just need to convert the resistance # to peloton

Is this the one that was called the prime bike and advertised as a joint venture with amazon until amazon said they had nothing to do with it ?

No, it is NOT the same bike, but it is very similar, only minor differences. With a tiny bit of effort, you could find some back to back comparisons, such as on the FB group for Echelon & Peloton.

Does anyone know what type of spin shoe this fits? Is it SPD?
Quote from shakil_san :
yes SPD
No, it is not. I had just stated a little while before this was asked that one of the differences with the more expensive EX3 was that the EX3 had SPD. The Sport does not. So, you have to pay extra to get those.

Don't forget to use your discover credit card after activating it for 5% quarterly cash back. Get $25 back
Anyone with a Discover should already know their categories. But don't forget, you have to pay tax, so that adds back on even more than the cashback saves you.

Hmmm In the post you replied to, I had stated, quote, "freestyle app, even though there is no subscription fee".
