Hey everyone, I bought this over a month ago with the colder weather coming, and I just hit my 100th ride this week so I've become pretty used to the system. I've posted this in similar threads to this and people have found it helpful, so here's my how-to Peloton guide that tells you what you need.

Required items you'll need:

Echelon bike [walmart.com]
Peloton app [onepeloton.com]
Peloton subscription (Note, if you have a friend who has a bike subscription you can ask if they'll create an account for you instead to save some money)
Two streaming devices
One to connect to the Echelon app [echelonfit.com] to display your statistics, usually a phone
One to connect to the Peloton app to display the classes, usually a tablet

Optional add-ons to improve the experience

Wahoo cadence sensor [amazon.com] - iOS support only - this attaches to your bike's gearshaft and can be connected to the Peloton app to integrate your cadence. You'll already be getting cadence information from the Echelon app on your phone, but if you want it to display in the Peloton app, you'll need this too.

Polar OH1+ heart rate sensor [amazon.com] - this wraps around your arm and can provide heart rate data to the Peloton app. Instructors will mention heart rate zones to target in advanced classes, so if you want to be able to follow along you'll need this, but it's not required. You will also get more accurate calorie burn counts with your heart rate being measured.

Note: If you are an iOS user and have an Apple Watch, you have a couple options instead of buying a sensor.

Use Peloton app on your iPhone. If you use your iPhone for displaying the class, it will have direct access to your heart rate from your Apple Watch.

Download HeartCast [apple.com] which allows your Apple Watch to broadcast heart rate over bluetooth. You can pair this with your iPad/Android tablet.

Bicycle mat [amazon.com] - The official Echelon mat is 27"x47", so this should fit underneath it to catch your sweat and protect your carpet/hardwood floor.
1-3lb dumbbells [amazon.com] - In some classes, the instructor will tell you to do some lifts, so you'll need a set of light weights
Peloton to Echelon resistance chart [etsy.com] - The instructor will call out numbers to change your bicycle resistance during the class, but the Echelon uses a different scale so you can print this out or buy one to have as a handy reference.
Gel bicycle seat cover [amazon.com] - If you are gonna be spinning for a long time, the gel will help ease any pain you have in your backside

To get the baseline experience done, you'll need to setup your Echelon bike as described in the manual. After physical setup is complete, download the Echelon app to your phone, and then plug in your bike and start the pairing process.

Next, if you bought either of the optional sensors you'll need to pair them with your ipad/android tablet.

Once paired, to get your Echelon app into freestyle mode to display your statistics, go to the bottom right of the app, select "More", then "Freestyle Ride".

Finally, you will then be able to load the Peloton app on your tablet, select a class, and start going.

Thanks, picked one up.

Don't forget Chase Freedom has Walmart as one of the 5% categories this quarter!

You have to pay for the Peloton app correct? My wife wants me to buy her one of these Peloton type bikes and I'm trying to understand the pros and cons. The one review said the only bike that was "open source" allowing you to use any app was the Bowflex but this is half the price.

Personally I figure I will be watching the bike sit in the corner for six months then I will sell it on Craigslist but maybe I'm wrong.

So is this comes with its own app that can measure cadence and resistance or I have to subscribe to that features with fee?

This is half the price of Echelon's own EX-3 model. Which I of course just got. If there is any difference in quality or specs between them though?

Only difference I can see is that the EX-3 has pedals that allow for either regular sneakers (like the Sport does) or clip-ons (which the Sport does not). If you are not planning to get clip-ons, that makes no difference though.
We did the same thing and purchased the EX-3 as the sport was out of stock about a month'ish ago. I know the clips aren't standard on the sport as you mentioned.

I am guessing the EX-3 is built with better parts? A friend of mine also mentioned that the sport might not have the bluetooth connectivity?

Does anyone else know the difference between the EX-3 and sport?

Sport = $500
EX-3 = $1000

Hmmm.... Should I consider something like this or hold off for a Concept2 BikeErg? I have the Model D rower coming next week, but Im thinking a bike might be nice to have too for some faster paced cardio. Or perhaps I should consider a Rogue Assault Bike... Those seem to be recommended pretty often.
Anything made by Concept2 is top notch! There's a reason why the rower is used in the CrossFit games. And it's the only gym rower that you can set World Records that are officially recognized by Guinness. It mimics the actual mechanics and feel of being on the water. Also, the Concept2 will last forever!

The BikeErg is a phenomenally built stationary bike. I've used it AND a Peloton. I prefer the BikeErg, but probably only because I'm bias as to the durability and quality of anything made by Concept2! The Peloton is also a phenomenal stationary bike! And you really can't go wrong with either. I've never used an Echelon so I can't directly compare. But the Peloton and BikeErg are about as good as you can get for a stationary bike.

Seeing you're contemplating the BikeErg because you're getting their rower, try the SkiErg!!! It's probably my favorite piece of gym equipment!! One of the best workouts you can do!!! Basically uses the same muscles as the rower, but in "opposite" ways. I have one! It actually has a a much smaller footprint than the rower. My rower, too, is coming next week. I will also get the BikeErg to complete my. Concept2 gym!!

Anything Concept2 is world class!

No you do not. Cadence, output and resistance is displayed on your phone. You do need an iPad/second display to run the Peloton app. The Wahoo cadence is helpful to have though because it is displayed on the iPad screen, that way you don't have to look down at your phone.

A big benefit for me with using a 3rd party cadence sensor (I have the wahoo) is tracking your cadence within the Peloton app itself. If you go to your workout history, click on a workout, you can see what your cadence looked like throughout the ride. Same goes with heart rate. I use my apple watch to track heart rate, and that's also tracked on each workout, so I can see how much time has been spent in each of the 4 heart rate zones.

you can do a "freestyle ride" in the echelon app that doesn't require a subscription. This will show you your resistance, cadence and power output (and some other info). It doesn't keep this info in a log, however.

I own this. Quality of the bike and smoothness is very good. Nicer than the ProForm bikes at my Gym. Look at the cost of the Echelon plans. $20-40/month. Without the app, you don't have a way to see the resistance setting (numerical 1-32).

My understanding is that you don't have to pay $20-40/month to get resistance or metrics, but it does require the app. App installation requires setting up an account and activating a subscription (3 months free for new bikes). So you have to subscribe to install the app, even though it's "free". I wish the app didn't require the subscription.

Classes are ok. Some of the instructors are annoying and live classes are every 30 mins to hour and a half. Some on demand are available.

I use an Amazon Fire for my app that I installed Google Play on....works fine.

No, your friend is wrong. The Sport absolutely has bluetooth and uses it to connect to the Freestyle app to display your reatlime metrics from the bike including resistance reading, cadence, and power output watts. The bike has no built-in display, and it requires internet access to use the freestyle app, even though there is no subscription fee. The EX3 has SPD clip pedals and a heavier flywheel among some other differences, but I don't see value being that much higher.

Also, flywheel weight can easily be compensated for by gearing it to rotate at a higher speed so that the momentum of a lighter flywheel can equal that of a smaller one.

It looks like the include "free" 6 months subscription does NOT include any of the cycling classes/videos, which is why it's $120 value instead of $240 value, as the United membership that includes cycling is $40/mo. So, it looks like the included 6 month subscription is pretty much worthless as far as spinning unless you can get some sucker at Echelon to give you 6 months of cycling classes, as a couple people on the FB group apparently were able to do.

The mat also functions to collect sweat during use. I don't think you want to be dripping sweat onto hardwood floors.

I'm also curious on the best value mat, I just bought the first one I saw on Amazon at $30 without research and think I overpaid. I'll return it if there are recommended ones.

If it doesnt come with the real classes its going back to Walmart.
