I just purchased this water heater, normally $1299, for $799 + tax + $75 shipping.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem.../312742081

Steps to get deal:
1) Go to above link
2) Change store to zip code 15010(Edit: use Zip 97322 for $699 instead of $799)
3) Select Ship to Home (unless you happen to live close to this store), add to cart.
4) Check out.

Additional notes:
1) Federal tax credit of $300. State tax credits vary, in my home state we get an additional $400 (bringing this heater down to $99 + $75 shipping + tax).
2) For many/most, the $75 shipping is worth it even if you can get this price locally as these heaters are quite heavy and supposedly must be transported vertically.
3) Do your homework on these hybrid heaters before purchasing. You need 220V to operate. Installation expense is generally much higher with hybrid electric vs standard electric resistance heaters and gas heaters. Hot water recovery is very slow (but you can switch to standard electric mode for rapid recovery when you know your usage will be high, e.g. having company over). They can apparently be loud, so if this will be located close to a bedroom, important to think about. There are important climate and installation location factors to consider--just google.
4) The newest generation of this series from Rheem, called "Proterra" can be had for $1269, a slight discount compared to full price (15% for my location). After carefully examining specs, photos, etc - it seems that the only difference with the Proterra series is built-in leak detection with auto-shutoff. FYI if that feature is important to you, you can add it for $219:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem...513?NCNI-5
5) This is for 50 gallon. Looks like if you need 65 gal or 80 gal, the Proterra is actually on sale (whereas the Performance Platinum is full price), making the Proterra cheaper.

would this even make sense for me?

Currently have a gas water heater that is at least 9+ years old (moved in 9 years ago and never touched this water heater). Manufactured date is 2002 but I dont know when it was actually installed. Probably safe to assume this is close to 15 years of usage than 10. I will probably need to replace it soon.

Im tempted to get this. Would this even make sense? It will be in my garage which unfortunately is the coolest part of my house. Even with my current gas heater, I use a lot less gas than electricity. I care about saving money.

I have a 30+ year old Gas WH in Central Minnesota and it still wors like a charm. The maintenance technician did mention that the WH is too big for the house but more hot water for the cold winters we have. It does not make sense for me personally to go with either an electric or a tankless (both gas and electric) since we need hot water for the extended winters. This looks like a great deal for southern states or mild winter states.

I installed this with about $200 in parts, including the Pex crimp tool. Took about 4 hours, 1 full hour to drain the old tank. Its in my S. FL garage that faces SW and heated that easily gets to the 90's in the afternoons. Since installing this heater when I walk into the garage, its actually cooler than some parts of the house which is a pleasant surprise. To confirm its about as loud if not louder than a fridge. It uses on average 4kWh a day with 4 adults in the house with the temp set at 120.

I also installed a recirculation pump to help get the hot water to the other side of the house faster. The condensate drain line actually drains more water than I expected. If you do not have a nearby drain, I saw some youtube videos of people with pumps and 5 gallon buckets they emptied weekly.

I have the 55 gallon tank, and when I want to fill the jacuzzi bathtub I put the water temp to 130 and set it to high demand so I have plenty of water to fill the tub. When I'm done I just set the temp back down and back to hybrid mode. The recirculation pump is on a Kasa wall plug timer.

Everytime I try to check out, it switches it to my current zip and takes away the good pricing. How do I get it to work?

With what information you provided...I would replace (when needed) with another gas WH. Gas has fast recovery, less complex, and running cost usually close to a HPWH.

I could certainly do the install myself...and the hot water heater already sits next to my washing machine so the condensate line would be easy. However, for anyone considering self install, you may have to forgo some rebates. Read carefully. That's the case for my local utility. Does not seem to be the case for the federal rebate, I couldn't find any language about needing contractor receipts.
I made a fake invoice for Utility rebate, used a buddy's name on it (contractor). They didn't verify it, just mailed the check.

That's an asshole move. Not only is that wire/mail fraud, but you could have dragged your "buddy" into this scam. You lucked out this time but it's not worth risking a federal crime for a few hundred dollars.

I'm surprised your buddy was okay with you putting his name on this scam. But if he didn't know, you are an even bigger asshole dragging him into this.

My utility (which also is my city) also requires a final inspection and installation permit. Not going to be getting those from the city and faking a contractor's invoice. Either way, my point is only to check things out to see what rebate requirements are.

I'm actually looking for a water heater right now, Seems like a good deal, but in my area, gas is a whole lot cheaper than electricity. I'll probably get something like a 50 gal Performance Platinum.

Thank you! I saw that and was thrown off with the 2018/2019 dates. I'm guessing it will still work for 2020?
Sorry if this is a stupid question. Somewhat new homeowner and never applied for a tax credit like this before.

why aren't you going to get the inspection and permit from the city? do you not plan on selling the house in the future?

Thanks OP saved me $500! Just ordered a ship to store at the $1,299 price last week. I tried to get them to price match and credit the order being shipped, but they would not price adjust. I ordered one @ $799 and will cancel the $1,299 one when I am sure the other one has shipped.
You are going to have to deny delivery when they come to deliver. For some reason Home Depot cannot stop and kill your order. Then you will have to bug them to send a credit to your credit card. Ask me how I know 6 phone calls later. 😡

I would NOT use the 2019 version as there are small changes between 2019 and 2020.

If you want to get a head start, here's the draft of the 2020 version (dont use this for filling as it still might change).

You misunderstand. I am not getting this deal due to the aforementioned issues making it cost prohibitive. Hence, I am not getting an inspection and permit. And also part of my intention, anyone else with similar requirements cannot both get those from the city and fake one aspect...crazy idea and wouldn't happen because the permits will only be issued to a licensed contractor in the first place.

That said, for DIY installers... never heard of issues for missing permits for a replacement hot water heater holding up a home sale.
