R-SIM is a SIM card add-on that looks like a really thin SIM card that mounts on top of your nano sim (or below depending on the model) that allows you to bypass the sim lock by hard coding a new ICCID that is unlocked.

You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.

It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.

Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.

back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.

As long as you have an old Sprint SIM card laying around (they're reusable)... and an IMEI from a phone that's compatible with Sprint's network, you can sign up for the $5 service (data only) or if you want to play it safe... $6 service (500mb data, 100 min). Pay for service, enter in IMEI and SIM card info, activate. You'll have instant access to a new phone number, pin to access port out info.

If I were to get this and activate on cricket for 6 months and get it unlocked, would I then be able to use it on verizon or sprint? I.E. is it the same phone that I would buy if I bought it from verizon?

Did you had to sign for the package? Mine is on the way to UPS since yesterday and it says signature required but I won't be at home to sign it.

Also, someone mentioned cricket phones shows as financed. I doubt it is true as they are prepaid, but can you please check that?

It's true, Cricket iPhones are marked as financed for first six months. Then the flag is auto removed.

So I decided to activate both the phones I ordered before shipping them into Apple (Phobio) for trade in.

Duck it. I would have to go to UPS to pick it up then if they require signature.

I guess you can check for free with swappa. I do not have any financed device to verify this.
