Zwilling J.A. Henckels Four-Star knives are very good knives and you won't be disappointed. I personally own a Four-Star santoku for the last 5 years and really enjoy it. About 3-4 years ago, you can get this set down to $120 range during Black Friday but nowadays $150 is a decent deal.

For those who are only interested in getting a good chef's knife, here is a Zwilling® Pro 7-Inch Chef's Knife at Bed Bath and Beyond for $59.99. If you have a $15 off $50 coupon or 20% off single item coupon, you can get it for $44.99 or $47.99 + tax. Shipping is free on $39+ purchases.

https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/...d=61800755

Zwilling® Pro is a step up from Four-Star. Because it has half bolster, the 7-inch chef's knife has the entire 7 inches of cutting edge while the 8-inch Four-Star chef's knife has 7.5 inches or less cutting edge due to its full bolster. Not everyone is a fan of full bolster especially if you sharpen your knives yourself. Pro has full tang while Four-star has 3/4 tang. I also own this Zwilling® Pro 7-inch chef's knife.

I think this might be a better deal if you also need the steak knives are probably worth about $250 alone.

Five-star and Four-star are basically the same knives, the only difference is that Five-star knives have slim and ergonomic handles vs an average-sized straight handles in Four-star. It is more of a personal preference which handle you prefer. For me, I found that those slim handles of Five-star are just too small for me especially for the chef's knife. I bought a set of Five-star 2 years ago at a decent discount and ended up gifting it out after realizing that their slim handles are not for me. But if you are OK with slim handles, the Five-star set from Bed Bath and Beyond is not bad in price especially if you can redeem your Discovery card cashback for BBB gift cards.

That is a smart move. A chef's knife and a pairing knife are pretty much what you need. If you eat a lot of bread, you may need a bread knife - but there is no point to overpay for a bread knife as it is a serrated knife. All serrated knives, with very few exceptions (such as Cutco serrated knives), cannot be sharpened or at least sharpened at home. Even high-end serrated knives will eventually become dull in 7-8 years (the cheap ones will become dull in 7-8 months). If they cannot be sharpened they would become useless when they are dull or you will simply saw (not cut) your food.

I have several Henckels knives.

First off, I thought I'd prefer Japanese knives. After owning several fancy ones, they are simply too lightweight and dainty (I'm not a huge guy, 5'11" 190 lbs).

Henckels knives are amazing, and this is a great deal on a reasonably sized set (as others have stated, these sets are often just a way to sell a bunch of knives you don't need).

That said, I'd HIGHLY recommend trying the 10" chef's knife. It's absolutely amazing. Combine it's razor edge with it's weight, and the blade practically falls through whatever it's cutting. Also, the larger surface of the blade is great for scooping up whatever you've just cut.

Honestly, having used the 10" and the 8" and the Henckels santoku, the 10" is all I'd ever need. I don't ever reach for the others unless the 10" is dirty. Most retail locations will let you demo these knives. Do yourself a favor and try the 10" chef's knife!

10% code worked. Get the code and chat with customer service available in the checkout page. They applied the code manually and gave the discount. Seems like their system has some issue in automatically applying the discount.

Cutco vs These

After owning both for over a decade now, I can say the difference long term is dramatic. When I first got a few of the knives from this same exact line a couple years back, I felt stupid for buying Cutco. It wasnt until I was putting it through the same exact tasks as the Cutco that I realized how vastly better the Cutco knives are. They are far more balanced, the grip beats basically everybody (some do look nicer with the grip for sure but actual comfort, its unbeatable) and most important, very high grade steel.

If you dont cook constantly or you dont mind having your knives sharpened 4x more frequently compared to brands like Cutco, then yes this is probably a really great deal. Cutco is always the underdog with popularity. People who care more about showing off to friends/family or just going by looks/deals will probably not go with Cutco but if you are purely after whats best for Western style knives, I absolutely think they rank near the top. I know it doesnt say that much but they've even been official gifts from previous US presidents both Republican and Democrat to foreign heads of state. Pretty sure they arent going to give them junk.

Anyways, thats my thoughts. I'm also a firm believer in NOT getting the best for everything under the sun but instead getting high quality for the things I use most. Knives are one of those.
Interesting--I've had the opposite experience. I've also owed both Henckels and Cutco (and Wusthof) for a long time, and I find the Heckels and Wusthofs to be far superior to the Cutcos. I will admit that I like the feel of the Cutco handle, but the Henckels are forged (not stamped out of metal sheets like the Cutco) and have much better balance and feel overall for me. I've also found the Henckels to get sharper and stay sharper longer. And I don;t care about showiness or bragging, I just want a great knife with great usability, and for me, Cutco fall far short of the Henckels and Wusthof forged series out there. But to each their own, of course! Glad you enjoy your set- good knives are a joy to use.

There's the psychology getting you. They are making you think it's such a great deal when you don't even need any of that other stuff but man that single knife is 99 so why not buy all this other shit for another 50. You are getting suckered. The way they price these things is by design and you are falling for it. They overprice the knives individually to sell you the sets because that's where they make their margins back. But if you want to get it then by all means.
I have given these sets away for years, good knives overall compared to what family, friends, and girlfriends typically have. The psychology point is not so relevant here as most people will at least want the chef, paring, and bread knife plus a storage block. (And maybe the kitchen shears). This set doesn't have all the extras that are bit always used and is a great value as the paring and chef knives (plus honing steel) alone are that cost, and BBB has long excluded expensive cutlery from the 20% off coupons.

As to the block versus magnet question, a block will not damage your knives unless you are losing them wrong. If you wash the knives before putting them away, there should be nasties inside and they are angled so dust won't typically style into the slots which you can rinse with water.. I've used a magnet bar and a knife tray but went back to a block after my kids were able to reach the drawer.

Thanks. I went with the $160 7-PC set from BBB after 20% coupon. Self-sharpening block looked more convenient to me, and I had discover cashback to use. Currently, BBB is having a promotion for $50 rewards for $200+ spending, so I got additional $55 worth of items, which gets down to $40 if you stack a $15 off $50 coupon.
In summary, I ended up with the $160 7-PC set + $55 worth of items + $50 BBB rewards by using $160 Discover cashback and ~$20 for tax.
