One of a number of YouTube videos on refilling your tanks yourself using dry ice from your local grocery store (YMMV).

Bought a similar deal from Target a couple weeks ago. I love this thing. A couple tips: DO NOT use anything other than PURE WATER to carbonate. Carbonating anything other than straight, unflavored water (even fruit infused water) will result in a super fizzy mess and a nozzle that will harbor bacteria. There is no advantage to flavoring before carbonation. Also, for fizzier drinks, use very, very cold water. Additional flavoring syrups from other brands like Mio or other water additives work great too, just don't use anything powdered unless you dissolve it in water first.
It's very easy to refill canisters yourself with dry ice and save a LOT of money.
Dry ice sells for $2-3 a pound at grocery store. You need about 1.5lbs to fully fill the canister.
Wear gloves!
Make sure canister is empty by pressing release valve on top of the bottle with your finger. Take a wrench and unscrew the brass valve from canister, take note not to lose the black rubber washer. Throw 1.5lbs of dry ice into a blender to turn it into powder. Attached a funnel to canister with masking tape. Pour dry ice into canister, leave couple inches from top for valve. Screw in valve and tighten with wrench, don't over tighten it won't unscrew under pressure. Let the canister sit for 2-3 hours in warm temperature for ice to turn to co2. Enjoy your fizzy pop!
Alternatively, for $1 more you can get the Fizzi Starter Kit with a bottle brush + extra bottle caps at SodaStream.com

Steps:

Select the Fizzi Starter Pack [sodastream.com] option (priced at $49.99) in a color of your choice and add to cart
Add SodaStream Bottle Brush [sodastream.com] to cart
Add 2-Pack SodaStream Stainless Steel Bottle Caps [sodastream.com] to cart
Proceed to checkout
Add discount code SPARKLE10 during checkout
Total will be $50.97 + Free Shipping

also keep in mind that you can buy the conversion kit to run just about any size c02 cylinder i bought a re-certified 10lb tank online for $47 and get it swapped for a filled tank for just $17 that is equal to 11 of the 14.5oz/60l soda stream cylinders for $64 the first time then $17 every time after that and thats cheaper than just one 14.5oz/60l soda stream tank ,

Not knocking a thrifty DIY, but just be really careful to follow those instructions closely and not to over do it. Too much pressure will cause an explosion.

is this the proper way? I saw someone mentioning they were going to make fresh juice and stuff so I guess they'll just make fresh juice and then pour some into the carbonated water after?

either way works...fresh fruit juice is healthier but more work

You can get the One-Touch (electric auto-pump, allows you to adjust fizz as well) for $64 at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. To me that was the better deal and what I went w

I've done vodka there are youtube tutorials. This thing will pay for itself via making your own white claw on no time.

Wait till Black Friday.
They usually have a deal for 89$ with whole set with Co2 canisters bottles and soda bottles and flavor set.
Last time I saw this deal on Amazon.
This is not a good deal compared to whole set.

If this is your first soda stream here's a foolproof tutorial on how to carbonate your water. Ignore the instructions that come in the box.

No it's not the code's fault. You needed to add something else to your cart to get your total back over $50.

I recommend adding a 2 pack of 0.5L bottles. Because the standard 1L bottles fill with air as you drink them, your soda will go flat despite the hermetic seal unless you drink the whole bottle at once. 0.5L is a more manageable serving size.

I have always wanted one of these for the last 5 years. My only concern was the taste of the syrups in comparison to pepsi, mt dew, etc. How are the flavor for for those who have one?

Thanks, no thanks.. Don't be lured by the lower entry price. You will be paying a lot of $$ per year to operate. Purchase your own CO2 tank and adapter to own something that will perform better, last longer, and be cheaper. Any time you purchase a product with consumables you need to figure out what your yearly cost will be.

I find you need to use a lot of syrup to replicate the taste and that gets pricey. The best and cheapest flavoring for this are the powdered true lemon or true grapefruit packets. They give a lot of concentrated flavor without diluting the carbonation in the drink. Making your own syrup is a good and inexpensive option, too. Making vanilla cream syrup is very straightforward. Since you'll use real sugar, it'll taste better than store bought stuff. Making your own Mt. Dew or Pepsi is a more of a project, though.

That's not true. Buying this and refilling with dry ice works better and costs less per year than making your own carbonator.

Carbonator has to be plastic else it would shatter. Just carbonate then transfer to glass https://www.amazon.com/SodaStream...B001P30HE0
