Essentials has a limit of 6 lines.
You would start with 3 lines (promotion 3rd line on us) and add 1 line everytime you see this promotion. These 3 new lines qualify for all promotions like free iphones, free android phones, whatever deal is available today at tmobile.com

Check the wiki for your SOC. If you're on that 2/$100 plan, it won't be listed. That plan was a limited-time offer and has been limited to 3 lines since it was released.
Check your account and make sure your plan wasn't changed.
Anyways, yes if you planned it right, you start out with TMO with the 2 paid lines plus 3rd line free (and hopefully 20% hookup at the start as well). . .and wait for more free lines vs. adding any more paid lines.
I joined in June, 2 paid Magenta lines, plus 3rd line free. next day the FLOU (june) started and grabbed that. Then Got 20% hookup added to account which was a 1% YMMV luck shot being on existing account. Then added free lines in Sept, Nov, and Dec. 7 Lines Magenta, 2 paid, 5 free
Essentials makes no sense if you plan to try and grab free lines, and overall have many lines. . .as the taxes are not included. And the benefits on Essentials are lacking vs Magenta.

Many who did the $300 Sprint BYOD deal, or the following $250 BYOD deal, or similar, earlier this year, have run into this. Check latest Sprint BYOD thread by Tuxedo1 for more info. . .
