I'm writing this review from the piece of junk called an A71.

HISTORY: I had a s9+ for almost 2 years. I tried to catch a good deal on the s10 or s20, but samsungs retail prices are outrageous and all promotions require an add-a-line. I got sick and tired of waiting and got an iPhone 11. Very powerful and smooth machine but i couldn't get used to the switch, specially without a fingerprint scanner.

Then I decided if I can't get a deal on a flagship phone, I'll try a "mid" tier Samsung A71. It's not a mid tier people. It's not. You'd think a phone that retails at $650 would be solid, its not. It stutters like the old cheap crap that cost $130 in a t-mobile store 7 years ago. Can't multitask properly. Almost freezes at least 2-3 times a day. Gotta close all the apps to give a chance to breathe. The s9+ was a much more solid performer. The freaking iPhone has their flagship processor in their $650 AND $400 phones. Only the size and features are different. Samsung should do the same.

Here's the worst part. A $650 that's not waterproof. They say it should handle a bit of splashing here and there, IT DOESNT. I was listening to a podcast in the shower and minimal water splashed on it. I wiped the water right after. The phone started acting like crazy. For almost a week, the volume is going up and down without the rockers being touched. Thought it was the case, but it wasn't. Also I couldn't hear anyone or anyone hear me no matter what I tried. Speaker, Bluetooth device, car. I Reset the phone 4 times during that period. Thankfully, it slowly went back to normal.

Also the fingerprint scanner is straight trash. It will scan my fingerprint on the first attempt 1 in 10 times if I'm lucky. I usual get frustrated and swipe up to use the pattern

This is my last Samsung device for a while. I'm probably going to give the pixel a try, and go back to the iPhone when they bring back the fingerprint scanner.

Further PROOF that this phone is trash. the pixel 5 and iPhone 11 are in the same retail price range, but never have these kind of promotions. And Samsung never has similar promotions on their other phones. Also, try to trade this phone BACK in to SASMUNG for their flagship phones, YOU SIMPLY CAN'T. It's not even listed. Because they know it has no value.

If you need a phone to get by, go for it. But do NOT buy this phone thinking it's a solid mid tier phone.
Looks like you had a lemon. I bought one for my wife and it works great. It doesn't have any stutters or multi app handling issues you mentioned. It's fast and smooth and has a great screen. I have a note 10 and screen is better on a71.
I wish it was water resistant, but at this price I am very happy.

I knew I shouldn't have waited this long for the T-Mo deal.

Sorry for a potentially dumb question, but since the T-Mobile model is OOS, will the Unlocked version work as a replacement for my current T-Mo phone if I just insert my current SIM card?

I'm having quite a bit of trouble, getting T-Mo to unlock this phone... I am a T-Mo user for over 12 yrs, and wife wants to use this on her Sprint account.
Have called T-Mo 3 times, and also sent DM on twitter. Nothing yet.
Do I need to insert any SIM to unlock?
They were able to unlock mine via chat on the Tmo app...took 72 hrs from the initial request to consequently hit settings-> connections-> more connection settings->network unlock -> network unlock and booom unlocked.
Initially if you do these steps you'll get an error to contact your carrier. I'd alsonsay to use the phone on any of your registered lines for a couple of days so it gets registered on their network.

It's unlocked, so it will work with almost any sim. T-mobile (oos) would have only worked with T- mobile.
But the unlocked one is almost $100 more, on the minimum.
Someone mention that the Samsung chat support might give you the coupon to bring the price down to same as the T-mobile locked version. Good luck

I am getting network issues. I was on S10+ LTE and no issues with data or connection. I went in and had them move my service over to T-Mobile hearing it was faster LTE along with the 5G (eventually). Unfortunately for me now I get no signal or constant disconnects. I went in to the T-mobile HQ store and decided to get a 5G S20 FE. No difference. The LTE and 5G are extremely fast in congested areas. Checking Tmobile map it says 5G signal here is STRONG and LTE acceptable. From what I read, Sprint existing customers, are piggy backing off Tmobile towers....... but not vice versa for the time being. Not sure whas up. I will go back in and maybe get another sim. My S10+ was perfectly fine on LTE Sprint.
The Sprint customers are now leaching off our towers? That's not good. Try trying off your 5G for the time being until things get better.

Weird, I bought my S10 in March 2019 and it still functions as fast as the day I bought it. I have unlimited data and use it both as a mobile hotspot and to download files via VPN and transfer to my PC. Also play Game Pass games from the cloud on it. Whenever I do an update, it tells me how many apps are being optimized, and I'm amazed that it can even handle 460 as well as it does.

I know at least some of you love your iPhones and came here to shit on Samsung. But the S10 is a tank.
Must be your first phone. Everyone knows that all smartphones and computers eventually slow down.

I agree with about comparing phone deals with phone deals.

I'm making a different point completely. I'm saying the Retail price placed by Samsung creates a false impression that it's on the same level as phones in the 600-650 range. So people who are buying this phone in the 200 range with promotion think they're getting a steal. I'm simply pointing out the $650 retail is misleading when comparing its overall status in the Smartphone world. Do you not agree with my point?

You're making my point for me, the iPhone and Pixel never go far from their retail because that's their true value. The A71 is never sold at or around the retail because people quickly figured out that it's severely overpriced at retail.
I'm not sure why you're arguing that I'm saying it's overpriced at 200, I'm not. I never even said go and buy the 600 iPhone instead. I simply said, temper expectations, You're not getting a 650 quality phone for 200, which is what Samsung wants consumers to believe.
You do realize that the $500 Pixel 4a 5G had a great sale a few weeks ago and it was selling to a similar price? Everyone remembers it.

Can u please tell me where can I check if a phone I own is blacklisted?
There are a few online checkers. IMEI24 [imei24.com] is one of the where you can check the basics for free including blacklist status.

No, it didn't flicker. It was just had spider web cracking near the edge of the screen extending towards the middle. It was raised a bit and was starting to get to the point where it could cut you if you weren't careful.

Wow, you're offended easily. You should read what I wrote, then read what you wrote. I said that this phone is not as capable as the S20 FE, but the hardware is near-identical. "Saving" $800 on a $200 device sold for $1000 is not a deal. I never said that Samsung said this was a flagship phone. And regardless of what a company sells, there are options for a reason and for the exact net amount this is a terrible device in comparison to similar net-priced deals. You need to divorce your wife or tell your boyfriend you can't leave her because you got some shit to work through on your own, bro. Calm down.
There is a silly poster that was telling us that the $1k phone was better. Uh duh. Thank you Captain Obvious. Read your post. Only a fool would even bring a $1k phone into the discussion. What are you talking about because you don't make any sense? "Saving" $800 on a $200 device sold for $1000?!" Where do you come up with these numbers? You are confused.

Maybe you want to talk about $1,500 phones now? You said this is a "terrible device" at $200.... Name me a recent better $200 phone because you forgot to mention those deals. The Pixel 4a 5G deal is like $50 more after trade-in and Google fi 2 months service if Hyla accepted..... Name me $200 or less phones with no expensive plan or credits better than this Samsung. This is better than the Pixel 3a promotion (apple trade-in and $100 google credit). The $200 Pixel 4a Walmart deal wasn't better. I got a brand new iPhone SE 2020 for under $150 and it isn't better than this Samsung. The $300 one plus 7t? Nope.... Gotta go back a few years when the Moto z2 Force deal happened that had better bang for the buck.

The only one that got a deal here was Samsung, they dumped their entire stock of junk A71s they couldn't sell to a bunch of suckers that traded in actual valuable phones...

By the way, check carrier trade in values for all variants of the A71 to see just how much market prices have cratered. The Sprint version of this phone trades in at $75! Oh and the A72 is out in a month or two, values about to go to zero
