Both... it has gps and a database of red light cameras PLUS, MRCD detection. MRCD is the radar tech deployed in most speed / red light cameras.
If you are planning on it I would say go for it. As far as I remember the cheapest I have seen it was $400 and can't remember if it was new or refurbished
You'll mainly depend on the database and gps. MRCD in the us is only used in NYC, Maryland and DC (according to vortex at least)
NYC metro area is peppered with MRCD. It's gotten to the point where not getting an MRCD alert every few mins feels strange.

Gotta make that dolla. At least you are not in virginia where it's illegal to have a radar detector and every city used tickets as a main source of income.

MRCD is not used in red light cameras. Other tech, like MRCT and RLSC are used in red light cameras. I have an R3 with the latest firmware and have never been alerted to these. All red light alerts I've encountered were GPS based
