and yes 800mah is typical, super high capacity squeezes maybe a few % more at the cost of higher self discharge when they exist.

That said, I got these about a month ago, and ran them through a La Crosse charger (one that charges/discharges/refreshes and has an LCD display). 8 or 9 of the 12 batteries indicated fine (showed close to rated capacity), using the discharge/recharge cycle. That cycle does a deep discharge, then a full charge and estimates the capacity. I put 2 of these in each of my 2 cordless handsets that needed new batteries, and they're holding a charge just fine. So for these 2 handsets, I am a happy camper...
I have 3 more handsets, but those are used infrequently, so I didn't need all 12 batteries. But since the cost difference was minimal, I just bought the 12 pack thinking I'd have some spares / use them for some remote controls. While I might have considered returning these, it's not worth my trip back to UPS do sent them back.
AS A DISCLAIMER -- The La Crosse charger is AAA compatible, BUT I know that AAA are VERY hard to truly detect the full charge state (unlike AA). So it's entirely possible that the trickle charge state tops these off to near their full capacity, and the batteries that seem to be poor capacity are just indicating a false positive charge. I haven't tested them in a real device yet, but I can tell you my two 4+ year old AAA Eneloops test at 80% of rated capacity in the charger (and power my FireTV remote).
