Original Post:
Amazon & Best Buy have sales on all of current gen of their Fire HD tablets on today, but that HSN deal looks like the best by far.

Fire HD 8 - $59.99 (Ad Supported)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TMJ1R3X/

Fire HD 8 Plus - $79.99 (Ad Supported) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0839NDRB2

Fire 10 - $94.99 (Ad Supported)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KD6YDKC

The versions without Ad-Support are also on sale.

The Fire 8 prices are just $5 higher than lowest ever per CCC. Fire 10 was $80 for Black Friday, so not as slick.

Still very good prices if you're in the market for a new Fire tablet and missed the holiday deals.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

Does Amazon not have a case for the new Plus model? Just the regular 8? Can't find any official case for it

hands down the worst os you can get a tablet filled with adds yes i know you can run android after doing bunch of stuff but you should not have to do that

That's why it's $60, because they make the money long term.

Wait, Amazon does that? I'd be willing to trade-in my 8 HD (2018) for an HD Plus if I only had to spend a few more bucks. It's been decent for offline netflix playback, but being my only microUSB device makes charging sometimes cumbersome. AFAIK there's no improved HEVC decoder since the SoC is just the same but faster and more RAM. Still, I'll pay like $30 to get USB-C/wireless charging. I don't even want Echo Show mode.
I have just traded in a 2017 HD 8 to get a 2020 HD 8 (non plus). Amazon gave me $20 trade in value for the 2017 and 20% off on the 2020, so I ended up paying a little less than $30 for the new one. If you want the plus version, going with this HSN deal might be easier and better.

Not sure if Amazon makes a case, but the HSN deal comes with a voucher for a free Caseable case.

I don't know but you are getting one extra gig of RAM so that should help
Also have you installed nova launcher and then disabled the fire launcher because that helps alot

Also don't block updates ,my 2018 HD 8 updated and it runs much better now
And I finally got micro G to work after the update before last , I was using my HD 10 latest gen the most , mostly because I couldn't log into vanced with micro G on the HD 8 even after trying everything
Since the update before last the tablet is much faster and I can now log into micro G and the battery is much better too
And I find myself using the HD8 2018 more now ,also the 10 seems to be slower now
But I have temp root on it and have disabled updates
Which also makes the HD 10 not have the alexa smart home control menu that I now have on the HD 8
This plus the smaller size makes the HD 8 my favorite now where as before it was the HD 10

I would like to get the new one but I already have too many fire tablets

Plus I am hoping they come out With one with more features like a folio keyboard connector

I can't believe they left that out on the latest HD 8
adding a magnetic 3 pin folio connector like on an ipad would allow them to sell a one piece show mode dock and a folio keyboard cover
multiple docks even ,ones with speakers ,maybe one in the form factor of an echo show 8 and one in the form of the new rotating echo show too
there is not much else left to add to these things
I rest hope the next gen we see this

Thanks! Installed Nova Launcher and updated to the latest XDA Fire Toolbox to tweak the setup. Made it so much faster!

Skeptical to get one of these after getting a Fire HD 7 back in 2017. I literally use it to read the NY Times (and watch movies on VLC when I travel), but it still gets glitchy.

Have these things improved enough to be a stable e-reader?
Big differences between the following on different year versions:
1. Hardware (processor, memory, storage)
2. Android Version

The 2017 version is totally different than the 2019 version of the 7. The 2019 versions are a little slow compared to some smartphones for gaming, but web browsing and video work great. The 8 and 10 models are even better. More memory makes the difference.

I have 2, 16gb 2019 7's I paid $30 each for at Target last year. I bought a Fire 10 from Amazon in November for $80. It's great. I installed Google Play on all of them.

I have 8 and 10 , 8 is sitting collecting dust waiting for decent trade in to get rid of it
I got my kids latest 10 for 79$ during prime day it worth every $
I mostly want to use the tablet to read in bed, where I'll be using my hands to hold it up. For that purpose, would the 8 be better since it's lighter?

Thanks!

I would definitely get the 10. Although it has the same amount of memory, it has a faster cpu and better resolution in screen. I wouldn't be surprised that Amazon is going to refresh the HD 10 with more memory and maybe a little better cpu this year.
For reading at night with the tablet in my lap, which do you think would be better, the 8 or the 10? I won't be watching videos or playing games on it.

Thanks.

You can use it as an Echo too.
How is the sound quality? Music is pretty good on my various Echos, but I'd be surprised if a tablet had decent sound.

Forgot to mention, the new HD 8 and HD 8 Plus have a landscape based camera. If you use get for a kid to use with OSMO, you will have to buy the $10 adapter.
What is OSMO? What age kid is interested in it? (I have a 14-year-old).

Thanks!

Not sure when that will happen . But durning prime day I traded my echo for 30$ plus 20% off the echo show 8 . Waiting for something similar or close at least .
I saw that the HD 10 is available for $95 so jumped on that deal. After trade-in, $45 + taxes. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade for me. HD 8 Plus has far better contrast but the extra screen real estate and decoding power really makes it a fantastic media client.

I was interested in the HD 8 Plus but saw that it had the same slow A53 cores as the HD 8 (2018). Both lack meaningful HEVC decoding power (maybe if you had L3 or worse). The extra RAM or slight clock boost isn't going to make it a more capable media client, unfortunately. I couldn't even stream HEVC L4 on VLC (for Fire) (HW accel full/off, RGB16b/YUV, OpenGL on/off). It's clear to me the smaller tablets can't cut it for media clients unless your media server is Netflix and not jellyfin on your desktop.

I actually jumped on the HD 10 for $45 + taxes after trade-in. Aside from the screen real estate boost (which is hugely appreciated for main use), the A73 cores and Mali-G72 make a world of difference. It can't hit 60fps throughout the UI like my Pixel 3 XL, but it's past the performance threshold. I'm not left waiting or wanting for power, like on the HD 8. Even for light browsing, I can't imagine the HD 8 Plus holding a candle to the HD 10. The only downside for me is the contrast ratio. About the same on the HD 8/10, whereas the HD 8 Plus has twice the contrast. Its black level gets down to 1/3 of the HD 8/10, whose screens don't always cut it for daytime viewing.

What's the point of microG? Why not use the toolbox on xda? I disabled most amazon services, then in dev options toggle off amazon services background access and change standby status for unimportant apps to RARE. 0.5x animation, and the tablet really flies for me. Very surprised to turn a turd and $45 into a speedy casual browser that can handle 1080p playback all the way through 8-bit HEVC and VP9.
