- This trash can operates with infrared motion sensor technology to allow you to simply wave your hand above the sensor at the front of the lid to open it automatically. The lid will remain open as long as there is an object in front of the sensor and close gently five seconds after the object is removed. If a hand or object breaks the infrared beam between the lid and the sensor while it's closing, re-triggering technology opens the lid again to prevent lid from closing on your hand.

You could also add either the 2-year ($4) or 3-year ($6) protection plan to meet free shipping qualifications, with Mainststays being a very mediocre store brand & as hard as my family is on kitchen trash cans, that's the only way I would purchase this.

I have this can, and it's a nice can. For ppl that keep saying foot pedal trash cans, it's user preference. I have had both styles, and prefer this one.

To the one above me, I still have the sensor trash can I bought from 2015 and it's been 6 years and it's working fine. I replace battery every 6 months. It works so much better than a foot pedal and talking about people don't want to accept new things. Geez.
