As it seems this model is only good for wifi 6 if you aren't planning to use it in a mesh. It'll drop back down to wifi 5 in order to support the mesh.

I was looking at this until I found out that there will be no merlin firmware support for it. So keep that in mind; I'll be looking for a price drop on the AX86U instead.

I bought this from Amazon and returned it less than a week later. When it works, it's great but then randomly, wifi will completely freeze and clients will be unable to connect until it is rebooted. Latest Asus firmware did not help.

Almost bit thought this was the 2 pack for a second.

Nevermind the product seems to only be discontinued in Australia.

All reviews I see on this router say that its an amazing standalone router, but when it was launched the mesh functionality was not ironed out so it was sub par. The mesh part over time got completely fixed now its also a great mesh router. So be very careful about old reviews.

For everyone questioning the marketing tactics and usability of this (what is it, Wi-fi 6 or Wi-Fi 5?), hopefully this clarifies things.

This single device:
  • 2×2 Wi-Fi 4 2.4GHz band
  • 2×2 Wi-Fi 5 5GHz band
  • 4×4 Wi-Fi 6 5GHz band
As a standalone device, it's a 4-port wireless Tri-band Wi-Fi 6 router. It is not operating as/in a mesh device/environment in this scenario.

Now, if you set up 2 of these devices and establish a mesh environment, said mesh will default to using the fastest Wi-Fi band for its dedicated "backhaul" (to establish and maintain the mesh). You can change the configuration to use Ethernet as the dedicated backhaul (it doesn't to this automagically just because you plugged opposite ends of an Ethernet cable into each). After such connection and change in the firmware, voila, your Wi-Fi 6 endpoints are provided full/total/complete 4x4 access to this band (aka, Wi-Fi 6 network). However, if you leave it with the default settings (don't have dedicated Ethernet or you do, but don't change it in the settings), your endpoints can only see/connect to the 2x2 Wi-Fi 5 5GHz band, leaving you with, as you now realize, a Wi-Fi 5 network (client to broadcaster connection/speed).

1. So for a 900 sqr ft two story house I would only need one of these correct?

2. For ethernet backhaul (ethernet cable connected between routers) where exactly do you change setting to use ethernet as backhaul instead of default wifi?

3. My eero 2nd gen dual band gets max 450MBps wifi wih 1gig fiber so what would be the max you would guess for this Asus router? Thanks

Just got a GT 11000. This might be a good option to add on. 🤔

patently false - if you read the desc re: AX mesh and this is also sold in a 2-pk for that reason.

You can use Aimesh, wifi6 at the same time https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1043439/

Thats what im doing. With the GT11000 all channels are 4x4. So even using one as a dedicated backhaul I keep WIFI6
Data Rate:
2.4GHz AX: 4x4 (Tx/Rx) 1024 QAM 20/40MHz, up to 1148Mbps
5G-1Hz AX: 4x4 (Tx/Rx) 1024 QAM 20/40/80/160MHz, up to 4804Mbps
5G-2Hz AX: 4x4 (Tx/Rx) 1024 QAM 20/40/80/160MHz, up to 4804Mbps

I have two of these running with dedicated Ethernet backhaul. Really fantastic overall, but I did have some issues with 2.4 dropping on the new firmware so i downgraded for now. Overall, very impressed with the performance. I only have one WiFi 6 device, but it does report wifi 6 speeds and the router does deliver on my gig internet speeds.

Does anyone know if it can do hardware acceleration for VPN? For some reasons, Asus doesn't advertise that as a feature on routers that support hardware based encryption, e.g. RT86U or GT-AC5300. It makes a huge difference if you are running a VPN client.

Amazon has the two pack for $350, which is about the same price as this if you intend to buy two.

Same situation with me, bought three from Microcenter kept for a week and returned. Same exact issue as well. Aren't these getting discontinued?
For those having problems with disconnect, ASUS introduced a new firmware this week. It seems to be working much better than the previous firmware which had some bugs. Hopefully, the random drops have been fixed. https://www.snbforums.com/threads...884/page-8

I've been using this router for over a year. Until the recent firmware update, it was rock solid. I use ethernet backhaul. You will have three channels, 2.4ghz, 5 ghz AC channel and 5 ghz AX channel. I have 1 gbps service and this router will deliver 900-950 mbps for wired connection and 850-900 mbps for wireless (at the router). I use the following features, Parental control, traffic monitor, Open VPN, DDNS server, QOS, AI protection.

While this is a great router, I do caution Netgear introduced the first WifFi6e router. it's still very pricy but I'd others are coming out soon. So, if you want the latest and greatest technology, you may want to wait a few months.

Thanks OP!!!! I had the 2 pack of this router and it boosted the speed of my home mesh massively. I needed one more and I just told my wife that it would be so much better if we had 3 of these.

No Wifi 6e (6Ghz) support. The "tri-band" claimed is for one 2.4Ghz band and two 5Ghz bands.

Yeah it will do mesh but it uses it's ONLY wifi 6 band (5-2) as the backbone for the mesh. The system would then operate as a wifi 5 mesh system. This is circumvented if you hardwire ethernet to both as mentioned in another post. There might be a way to configure the system but the review I read doesn't mention it.

EDIT: Found the review: https://dongknows.com/asus-rt-ax92u-review/

Guys I need some advice. I just bought an RT-AX88U days ago on Amazon for $280. Is this router better? The price seems better, but before I pack it up to return I want to get your opinion.
