Edit:
Forgot to mention, using laptops (2 different ones) with Intel AX200 WIFI boards, the max speed is only about 700 Mb/s when practically right next to the XT8, Win 10 confirmed they are connected with AX. Further away the speed will drop to below 500Mb/s very quickly. Really no better than good AC routers.
I currently have Orbi's and they are garbage. I ended up doing exactly as you did. I put them all in AP mode and used a separate router.
As far as the backhaul, I'm not really concerned with that. I ended up wiring my house for the backhaul for the Orbi's due to their issues with backhaul. So I will have wired backhaul for these.
I appreciate the input especially from someone who owns them but I guess I'll have to try for myself and see how it goes. I heard rave reviews about the Orbi's and the Velops which both ended up being trash when I put them to use.
Faster than my orbi rk50

I currently have the RBR50 and 2 satellites. The issues I had with backhaul was constantly dropping the satellites. All the sudden the ring on the top would just change color and I lost communication back to the router. I kept having issues with speeds while streaming via Netflix etc... I tried running a wire just across the floor through the house as a temporary solution to see if this helped and it did. So I then hardwired the house just for the satellites.
Before putting them in AP mode I constantly lost communication with all my smart devices in the house. My house has many smart devices. All my lights/fans etc... for my entire house are controlled by Alexa. I constantly got errors saying that the device was not responding. I checked out the device and sure enough it was not connected. This was random. It wasn't always the same device. Netgear support had me try all kinds of different settings, factory reset, etc... nothing worked.
Finally I decided to just try using another router for all my routing etc... and boom. Worked great. For around a year. Now the RBR50 randomly gets a purple ring and I have to reboot it. The last time this happened recently it just factory defaulted itself. I had to reconfigure everything.
Another issue with the RBR50 in AP mode is that you can't really use the app to do much. You lose the ability to locally login from the app. I just got around this by assigning an IP in the router to RBR and the satellites. Then I log in to them directly via IP and that's the only way you can update their firmware. The firmware will not update itself in AP mode.
Just way too many issues to continue to deal with.

My scenario:
Where I live, ISP availability is good (fingers crossed) so i'm not in need of dual-wan for availability sake. I do have a gigabit isp connection, that i'd like to span across two different parts of my house. Both parts would need a couple wired ports but currently i don't have a wired connection between these two parts of my home, hence my desire for wireless backhaul. I've heard good things about the Orbi 752 wireless backhaul, and of course the AIMesh on Asus XT8 is very appealing to me with its flexibility of supporting wired backhaul as well. I don't have very many IP devices of the controlled-by-alexa variety. (Max 9 such devices), hence my interest in these two specific routers. With iPhone 11/pro in the household, and a recent M1/MBP, we can definitely benefit from Wifi 6, and don't care to pay the premium/wait for 6e.

I use with my ATT modem router.
I used my modem router SSID to connect to my few house security devices like, garage doors, front door lock, thermostat.
And all other devices to Orbi.
They have been running fine, as I use ATT gateway as passthrough.
But, since last month barely not even year old, Orbi started crapping out. Devices constantly dropping Orbi wifi. When you move, they just drop connection and don't reconnect, devices showing strong signal to Orbi of course sitting 10 feet from Orbi router, but no internet.
The most impacted ones are my kids Chromebooks.
Where as my ATT router works just fine.
Upon calling the crappy Netgear support which mostly in India and they just opened the book run same shitty test of changing channels, ATT modem router already in pass through mode, they reboot and observe for 72 hours. When you call again another good for nothing ignorant rep or so called technical support specialist will ask you to do the same exact things, when you tell them you did all, they will disconnect the call and then you received an email with update to ticket, that low life support person stated that customer refused to do the troubleshooting, even though you did the same thing previously some 5 times.
Even on their suggestion I completely shut-off my modem router, as they were blaming signal interference, so even after completely disable my router WiFi, the garbage Orbi still having same issues. So those ignorant chutney laced rep finally told me that my device is bad. But, wait I am just outside my device replacement warranty, by just 12 days, because those little ignorant played their game for more than one month.
Not going to buy another netgear product.
I just bought a RBK753S wifi 6 system on sale and will sell my Orbi RBK53 AC3000 system (1 router + 2 satellites) which was rock solid for years and fast and covered our large home very well.
I considered the Asus XT8, but it only comes with 2 units and the Orbi comes with 3 units for a few dollars less and I had great experience with my prior Orbi whereas my Asus Lyra mesh system was awful at the time (support was great, but the product was not at all ready for primetime; I did have a better experience with their AC5300 router before getting my original Orbi), so I jumped on the RBK753S Wifi 6 Orbi...
My cable modem is a DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola MB8600 (settled on that since the Arris SB8200 ran hot and the Netgear CM1000 also did not work for my needs).
The above combination (modem + wifi system) has been excellent!
No issues with wireless backhaul here.
No connection issues; rock solid in terms of stability.
Speeds are excellent throughout the house.
Layout:
Orbi router is in corner room on main level (no choice given open layout I cannot locate the modem and router in the center of the 1st floor).
1 satellite upstairs
1 satellite in basement
Anyway, I just bought the RBK753S (was on sale for only $429.99 till last Sunday) since I like to maximize downstream mbps and my ISP just upgraded us again....
We also keep adding more wireless devices, like most households.
If your ISP downstream speeds are say between 300 - 350 Mbps or below AND / OR your house and basement combined are not over 4500 sq feet, then you probably won't benefit (mcuh) from a wifi 6 system now, although if you're upgrading from an older wireless router or wifi system, then you might as well get wifi 6 system now if on sale...
Even with my sub gigabit "400Mbps" tier (actual speeds are up to about 450 Mbps),I am seeing a nice up to 25 - 30% boost in internet download speeds with the RBK753S vs. the RBK53, even at very close range (same room with laptop less than 2 feet from the Orbi...
