Some games require quick movement of the mouse. Based on this and the surface below the mousepad, the pad can shift, requiring you to move it back into place, potentially while playing a game where distraction can get you "killed". Having a larger pad that's also under the keyboard can stop shifting.
You also don't have to worry about going over the edge of the pad with these quick movements when its bigger.
It can help prevent scratches on the desk surface from the keyboard.
It can be a matter of style and a way to customize your gaming rig.
These are nice mouse pads and worth it on sale. Best part is it is one of the few Corsair products that doesn't require you to install their awful iCue software.

Not sure why all the thumbs up, pretty sure this is normal price. I bought this exact one (well I have the spill proof one for $3 more) about 2 months back at the same price it is in this post. And BestBuy had it at the same price too, so this is normal pricing far as I've seen.
That said I like the mat a lot and is great for a keyboard / mouse combo. In my case I got it as I recently got a glass desk and while I love it I found I didn't like working on the raw glass, so I got this surface pad and it's been great. Moves a bit but overall tends to stay in place, is smooth to the touch and mouse movements. Wish the black one came in the extended size, but had to settle for the grey / black one. So far I've had it a couple months and it's held up fine, but that isn't a true test or length of time. I thought about going with one of the LED edged ones as they aren't that much more, but I don't think they lay as flat from what I've seen
Damn, that's what I should have got! May get this to pick up some spares...

Can someone explain to me why anyone would want their keyboard to be on the mouse pad? I don't get it.
Few reasons. In my case I have a glass desk, and I've found having a mat just feels better, I'm less prone to scratch the glass, etc... Other reason is for those with slim keyboards it acts as a nice palm rest. Since I have a mechanical keyboard though I have a separate palm wrest on top. The other big reason I got it was because my separate mouse pad was always moving around, but this mat, given it's size tends to stay in place pretty good, so I don't have to adjust it as I always did my mouse pad

is it worth spending extra on the spill-proof version?
I have the spill proof version, couldn't tell you what the difference is and I haven't spilled anything on it to say whether or not liquids bead up or anything. but since I eat & drink while at my computer I figured it was worth $3 more

This is a very thin desk mat but will serve its purpose. But I wouldn't say $17 is a smokin hot price for this. I remember when it was on sale for $15 and even then I regret not going for a thicker pad like the HyperX one which is also less narrow than this one (and not much more expensive).
I own 3 of these, one for my personal system, one for my work set up and my son has one too. Love it to be honest, I agree it's not the most beautiful thing in the world but I don't think I could ever go back to just a mouse pad.

Just means you don't have to worry about the keyboard overlapping the pad, your adjustment is infinite. Also it dampens your keyboard a bit as a bonus.
Good find if you need this pad right now. Also, the same price at Amazon[amazon.com]. I have bought a lot of these, and they are great. However, I have never had to pay more than $15 when on sale.

Wish they would update the design of this ugly ass thing.
I love over-sized mouse pads, but I don't see how this one is front page deal. As others have commented, it's ugly, and there are plenty of others on Amazon and eBay that look better at the same price or less. It's a good deal, but not FP material.
I think I have 6 or 7 of the extra large / desktop size mouse pads because I basically cover my entire desktop and swap them out every now and them.

smile.amazon.com is the default URL when you register for an Amazon Smile charity to support.
Amazon takes a small fraction of the profit they would have made on your purchase and donates it to a charity of your choosing.
If you aren't signed up for a charity, it redirects to the default URL. But I don't understand why anyone wouldn't sign up.
Maybe you should look into it.
I used to use a gun mat that does the same. And there are many gun graphics choices to choose from.
