I'll say it again. You can undervolt the processor a good amount: I boosted my 6 core performance 29%, and it runs cooler. You can basically make it as good as a Ryzen (or better) with no risk to hardware. You have total freedom to manipulate power, temperature, and noise to your liking. For instance it runs just as fast at 35W as it did at 45W stock. If I max out the fans and CPU I can run at ~68W and 91C and 4.3MHz on all cores forever.

Undervolting is locked out of most 10th gen CPUs, but MSI allows it. You need to enable it in the bios, and then use Throttlestop. Ryzen processors can't be undervolted.

4th time I've linked in this thread? https://www.techpowerup.com/forum...75.279412/

I'd never done anything like this before. It wasn't hard.

Since there is zero risk - you can get a price adjustment after the price changes by filling out a form online at COSTCO.com, I would buy NOW. It always makes sense to gift it ASAP. who knows, he may even get it on Tuesday though that would be quite tight?
He knows what I'm getting basically. Didn't know if this one was a good choice though. Price seems right. It this one or the Asus TUF Dash from best buy.

The TUF Dash is only 15.6" isn't it? It is CRITICAL that you figure out the screen size the wants. That is a critical factor besides the video card.

I think he is leaving that up to me. He really just needs it for school work. Everything is online nowdays and he hasn't accepted the school provided laptop because he is afraid he will lose/break it and have to pay an exorbitant price to replace it. I think its double what slickdealer would pay to replace the cheapie school chromebook.

Two factors to consider:

1. Will he be carrying it to school everyday (using it in class) and how far is it from where he will be staying (commute)? IF it is a short commute, or less than 15 to 20 min to lug around, then the 17.3" is better.

2. If he will be using it school all day where he won't be charging the battery, then a 15.6" inch would be better as it will technically have better battery life, assuming all other factors remain constant.

Personally, for gaming, I would prefer a larger screen.

Youngsters may not care about lugging around an extra pound since they are used to heavy textbooks. It may boil down to the battery life

How would you describe his interest in gaming. Light, Medium, or Heavy? That might influence screen size as well. Medium to heavy gamers may appreciate the extra screen space.

That's a good price; where did you buy?

Is the ONLY difference between the deal in this thread and the one in the link below the video card? If so, it begs the question of whether it is worth $100 to upgrade from the GTX 2060 to the GTX 2070 for just this aspect. It would be great to get opinions. Looking for real life experience as opposed to theoretical performance increase. I mean, would an average gamer notice a meaningful difference?

I was referencing pretty extensive gaming benchmarks, not theory.

IMO, 10% faster in games isn't worth even $100. And like I said earlier, I got a 12% improvement via UV/OC on the 2060 model.

The GPU appears to be the only difference between the two.

Of course, if you're willing to spend $500 or so more, just get the Asus Rog Strix 17 inch. It doesn't come with amazing 165hz 1440p with the base config but the combination of the 3070 and new Ryzen means exceptional performance. And most importantly, it runs incredibly cool!
What's your recommendation for a budget of $1,200?

Looks like MSI is still putting 10th gen Intel GPUs in these for 2021. The 3060 will give a good gaming boost of ~20% with no heat/temp penalty, but otherwise there appears to be no substantial difference. I
What is your current recommendation for the most affordable 3060 GTX with 17.3" screen ?

MaxP. 115W.

I bought the 2060 model recently and have no complaints. Improved GPU ~12% and CPU ~29% by undervolting and overclocking. Cooling is adequate with both maxed out. Great display and keyboard. It's nice to have a 2.5" drive installed and you can also add another m.2 drive.

It's still on sale for $1100 til tomorrow. https://www.costco.com/msi-ge75-r...68605.html

The 2070 should be ~10% faster than the 2060.
How's this compare to rtx 3060 (max-q lowest power)?

Got the OVERPOWERED 17.3" laptop from Walmart 3 years ago. Having problems now. Have you experienced any problems?

Have you cleaned the laptop to remove dust? Have you opened it yourself? Is it easy? Can one just use a dust buster to clean it out including the fans or is it better done at a geek store?

For someone who needs to buy a laptop in 1 or 2 weeks, why is the one in this thread the best one at this time. Shouldn't one be looking for a 3060? The Lenovo Legion is around $1,000 ($200 less than this deal) and has it though the screen admittedly is only 15.6" rather than 17.3". Other than the one in this deal, are there any other 17.3" deals? What about the the Gigabyte for $929 after rebate though that has the stepdown RTX 2060 but is a good $300 cheaper. I understand that one is sold out but was it a better deal?
Costco is the best retailer for computers. Walmart is probably #2. Newegg is terrible... and a rebate makes it worse.

If you buy today you can get the 2060 version of this laptop for $100 less: https://www.costco.com/msi-ge75-r...68605.html

I bought one and I'm happy with it. One great thing about MSI is that you can unlock undervolting and overclocking of the CPU in the bios. This is rare since Plundervolt. I got 29% better performance vs stock... it's like turning that crappy Intel CPU into a Ryzen...laugh out loud

Other things to look at are screen brightness, contrast, and response time. The Raider displays are great. This info is not typically listed in the specs... you have to dig through reviews.

3000 series GPUs will typically perform ~15-20% faster at the same power level vs 2000 series. That's another thing you have to dig for... what is the max power on the GPU? Both of these Raiders have 115W GPUs which is the maximum for 2060 or 2070.
