If you remove any paid lines within the first year, the free line loses the promo and becomes paid.

TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.

To accomplish it, you would need to:

1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.

This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
My port-in was initiated during T439 promo period and completed today outside of the promo period. Without the port in (with only the added line and traded-in) I was on a bad promo. Once the port-in completed today, the system auto updated to T439 promo in my account --> promotions. Therefore, I don't think it was a requirement the port-ins must be completed by 3/24 EOB, just as long as they are initiated.
YES, you can use this sim in your iPad. I pay for 2 lines and have 3 free lines on promotion (5 lines total)
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)
Hope this helps

So my questions are:
  • Are there any downsides to upgrading from "Magenta 1.0" to the new "Magenta" plan? It appears that old Magenta customers would only benefit from upgrading. What am I missing?
The consensus is that there's are no downsides to upgrading. I updated 11 days ago via T-Force on Twitter and everything (including discounts and free lines) moved over painlessly as expected. In addition to the hotspot change, you also get 100GB of "priority" data (compared to 50GB with Magenta 1.0) before possibly being throttled if on a congested tower.

The AAL in November last year worked with Costco BYOD. I did the $200 Costco Card and the $100 T-Mo port-in rebate on the free line. But, the AAL in December explicitly excluded Costco deals. This one also has that exclusion in Reddit.

Also, phone promotions don't usually work on these free lines but some have gotten lucky if they were able to do it in quick succession on the same lines and get the rebates as well. But, YMMV to the max!
Even for Dec AAL offer, there are some reports for getting both Costco BYOD Card and free line successfully.

Is it as easy as going to our accounts and opening up a line?

I got in on this a little less than a year ago. Three T-Mobile "Experts" told me that we could add a line, another told me we qualified for a discounted smartphone with that free line. We're still with them, but have spent over 10 hours with yet more "Experts" trying to unravel their mistake (and the overcharges that resulted). I had to port the number back to another carrier. But they raised the price of the new smartphone they sold me with the promotion back to the regular price and are debiting our account for that price (I never agreed to). They actually auto-debited charges that I have not authorized- and they are going to be working with my attorney to resolve that since they haven't done what they promised to make it right (including not having a supervisor call me). So- consider the cost, record your calls and take notes. Get names and Employee IDs.

I don't get the add a line thing, and I admittedly out of the loop on cell phone plans, but what's the draw on these? How many lines can you really use? With the exception of small business and such...seems that most customers would reach saturation point really quickly, so I don't understand why these deals are basically all that exist as promos from cell providers these days. You can't cancel a line and then re-add it, right? What's the deal?
More = Better... If you know, you know

Cannot have closed a line in the last 30, the 90 day is for porting in. Can't have been a number on tmo network in last 90 days to qualify for port in promos
I keep reading that... but have ported lines out from one T-mobile account to H2O and back to anithet T-mobile within a week and gotten port in promos...

I'm kinda kicking myself for getting the BOGO last week now.

I just checked and I am in 6FMSC4. I am currently on a base plan with 4 lines + 1 paid extra line. My end goal is to get the paid line to be free. What would be the best course of action?
1. Add new line
2. Move the paid line out of the plan (after x days?)
3. Move back the extra line in
4. Remove the extra phone number

Not really sure how the specifics go. If someone knows, I'd greatly appreciate it. Never done this before unfortunately.

I looked up the code for my One plus promo plan and it doesn't qualify. Big sad.
