TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.
To accomplish it, you would need to:
1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.
This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)
Hope this helps

2) TMO is pumping out deals as an 10-20 year investment to become a telco juggernaut. people dont understand how TMO can "afford" these deals because they are not thinking about a multi-decade growth pipeline.
2) So you're saying this is sort of like a pyramid scheme where they aren't worrying about current costs in hopes that new free lines will someday bring in enough new customers/revenue somehow to offset the promo's costs? You'd think they'd be running B1G1 deals and not free line deals then. But I'll take it. Hopefully their financial house of cards won't come crashing down for a very long time (same with the US financial system and the dollar). Kick the can down the road seems to be the most common strategy these days (for both companies and govt).
Point is, I'll take a 0% over 24 months on a device over a 2 year commitment with cancellation penalty any day, and the two are not in the same ballpark.

also, i wouldnt say TMO is running a pyramid scheme, but thats how many loss leader strategies are run. all/most silicon valley startup run this way. im sure you got plenty of free uber and lyft rides in the past. also, you probably use instagram and facebook for "free". well, how is that possible? its a pricing strategy that works.
This is definitely a too good to be true deal getting a free phone for just sales tax and a free line for the cost of a SIM with no price increase on the plan. The only caveat is I can't change any of the cell lines for 1 year which is easy because I'm happy with what I have.
This makes me wonder how T-Mobile can afford to give away free phones and lines to so many existing customers. I'd expect their phone lines would be jammed with millions of customers wanting this deal, but they weren't. I sure hope T-Mo doesn't go out of business and their cell towers don't become super congested with so many new (free) lines.

I see a $75 unlimited data charge followed by -$75 line on us.
