If you remove any paid lines within the first year, the free line loses the promo and becomes paid.

TMO doesn't want people doing what you're wanting to do.

To accomplish it, you would need to:

1. Add free line.
2. Wait a year + one day.
3. Port out paid line to another carrier.
4. Keep paid line active on another carrier for 90 days (to preserve number).
5. Port old number back in on free line.

This whole process has taken you 1.25 years.
My port-in was initiated during T439 promo period and completed today outside of the promo period. Without the port in (with only the added line and traded-in) I was on a bad promo. Once the port-in completed today, the system auto updated to T439 promo in my account --> promotions. Therefore, I don't think it was a requirement the port-ins must be completed by 3/24 EOB, just as long as they are initiated.
YES, you can use this sim in your iPad. I pay for 2 lines and have 3 free lines on promotion (5 lines total)
I have 2 of my free lines in a iPad and a Samsung S4 tablet, with UNLIMITED data.
You have to call them and tell them you want to use the line (promo line) in a tablet but don't want to lose the promotion and you don't want to open a new line for this.
What they did for me, was block the phone service on the line and kept the messaging and data. That way I am able to use it in my tablet.
Every summer my daughter comes and visit from Germany. I take one of the sim card out of my tablet and put it in her phone..
I call T-Mobile and have them unblock the phone service. That way, my daughter has a phone while she is here in country.
When she leaves I call them back and get it blocked again. I have been doing this for close to 5 years. So I know for a fact it works.
Tomorrow I will be calling to try and get another free line.. (Fingers Crossed)
Hope this helps

I added a free line on Wednesday and already received my free Motorola G Play phone that I was able to select with it. This brings me to 2 paid + 4 free on Magenta for $120/mo.

Can anyone tell me if it is worth giving up my 55+ plan to get one of these magenta lines with free number? I'm going to need 4 or 5 lines in the future.

FWIW last night I added the free line at Costco and took advantage of the $150 Costco Shop Card as well -- applied for it already and will take several weeks to receive. But I did receive the Free Line text last night and it was already showing as "2021 Line On Us 6" on my account. The $150 Costco deal expired yesterday, don't know if something else took its place today.
It's extended and still $150.

Sigh I'm paying 180 magenta plan for 7 lines and 2 data lines. Seems like I'm the one overpaying.

No need to worry about not having physical sim in hand. As long as the new phone number is created and you can see it in your account, you can go ahead and order a new phone, trade-in, and port-in a qualified number.
Is it possible add the new line and order the phone online but complete the trade in at a T-Mobile store so the risk of rejection of the trade in phone is lower.

I remember asking the same question before, and they told me no.

Just added a line and the free Iphone 12 with trade in. They didn't ask me to port a number. We will see what happens.

Same thing happened to me. I even asked if there was anything else that I needed to do and the rep told me "just send in your phone when you get the iphone 12". Hopefully no problems down the line.

Was in the store taking care of some stuff already so we added a line to our account. Was charged $10 for the sim card and $20 for "assisted support." is that the activation fee everyone pays or is it something else?

The 20 is for in store service. If u do it online, you don't pay the 20

In store, you have 99% chance of paying for it. On the phone, about 50:50 chance according to my experience after asking them to waive it. No charge if you do it online.

You are supposed to port-in in order to get it for free.

Have they changed their port-in requirement?
