I fish, but I'm not a serious fisherman. I hike but I'm not a serious backpacker. And I tinker around the house but I'm not a serious woodworker or mechanic.

So when I see deals for products for them I don't fully understand, I keep my mouth shut.

If you do long rides, your phone isn't going to last, simple as that.

One of the best features of the RTL510 radar is both the built in light and the dynamic adjustment of the flash pattern when cars approach (to get their attention and warn folks riding behind you of an approaching car) which doesn't happen with the light-less RVR315.
That's an awesome feature but I didn't see it mentioned in the DC Rainmaker review. I found the details in the online manual but kind of bummed that they didn't make a setting to leave the light off until a car is detected in order to save battery life. It basically just goes from solid light > flashing light if in a solid light mode or from flashing > flashing fast if in a flashing mode.

Avg MPH is somewhat of an important stat. Phone GPS isn't very accurate. The phone GPS with Wahoo Fitness app or also Apple Watch GPS, my average miles per hour is 1 mph slower than my bike computer. I've noticed at stop signs, my phone doesn't auto-stop as quickly as a dedicated bike computer.
Thanks! Thanks super interesting, since the Vivoactive 3 GPS location is scarily accurate (I've been able two tell the difference in tracking afterwards whether I was on the sidewalk, one side of the street, or the other). That said I don't know how accurate the MPH tracking is, so I'll look into this. Thanks!

another positive vote for the radar here. I have the rtl510 and won't ride without it anymore - it's beyond amazing.

On another note, i also use the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt as my bike computer. It's selling for ~$230 nowadays but will occasionally go on sale for ~$200 or slightly less. It's great and is far superior (especially for navigation) to the Gamin 130 (obviously it's more expensive, but imo money well spent).

My phone has GPS. And it's as accurate as the US government will legally allow. This product does not get around that
I'll put you down in the "I'm not a cyclist." because GPS is "a" thing it does, but oh so many things it does that a phone will never do...

Try again. One, there are more systems than "GPS". Two, chipsets and other techniques CAN improve accuracy. US Gov't can degrade GPS timing, but hasn't since Clinton. (open the conspiracy theory floodgates)

The edge syncs with Strava. I can't imagine using just that app while riding, though.
I had to do that this week. Was riding my bike back from dropping off the car for service. Only 11 miles but I forgot my computer and radar, so used Strava App. Speed was off, altitude was off, no cadence, no power, no radar warnings. Yeah hard pass. I'll take my 1030 + RTL 515 10 times out of 10.

The head unit in this offer is basic, but the radar is a game changer...

Always with the phone comparisons. A smartphone CAN do most if not all the same things as a dedicated GPS, just not as well. I used a phone for a long time and it was fine. Finally switched to a GPS unit, and it's better. I'm sure everyone belittling this deal hasn't used one before and therefore is in no place to compare. I don't know anyone who has used a GPS unit and still prefers their phone as a cycling computer.

Regarding the deal, wish there was a sale on the tail light too! Been waiting for one.

Is the Varia actually worth it? I ride enough as a triathlete, but I can't help wonder if it's another gimmick that wouldn't really help from being hit as you'd just tune the warnings out after time.

It might not be worth it for you if you mostly ride on busy streets. If you ride on back roads with few drivers, especially at night, it might be worth it.

The RTL510 went on sale a few months ago for $144 and I'd strongly recommend holding off for the RTL515 or RTL510 instead.
I'm not sure it's worth waiting. The RTL510 seems to have been discontinued, which triggered the prior sales. I don't know that those sales will come again, and I haven't seen RTL515 get anywhere close to $120.

Additionally, I don't think the changing pattern on the flashing light is useful. As a driver I've never paid any attention to the pattern of the flashing light on bicycles, so a regular flashing light is probably just as good. Now, you're right, it may help alert others you're riding with. But, I don't know how I feel about others relying on my equipment for safety.

So yeah, I've pulled the trigger on both the computer and radar on this deal. I'm a weekend warrior cyclist, but I've grown tired of squinting at my phone and worrying about battery life.

Triathlete here. I can't ride without the radar anymore. Might just be me, but I never tune it out. I generally glance over my left shoulder and try to gauge whether the car sees me or not. I would have such anxiety without it now that I'm used to it.

Do you think the rvr315 is worth it for just the radar? I already have a very bright cyglolight 200lm taillight with tons of modes and a edge 520+. For the RVR315 it would be about $100 for me vs $200 for the 510..
Also I'm primary a solo rider and try to ride lower traffic roads but many can be 55mph and scary when a pack of brodozer trucks. I bought a aero sprint tech mirror for my left bar end but not tried yet, I feel like Im always looking over my shoulder causing me to hit potholes and almost crash, plus those hybrids and tesla's can scare the crap out of you..
yeah think I just talked myself into a Rvr315, $100 is cheaper than becoming roadkill..

You must not be an actual cyclist or runner. Don't worry, move along, I'm sure the apps work well enough for your exercises.

Not to reiterate what other people have said too much, but if you're not noticing any limitations by using your phone, keep using your phone. I started looking for a bike computer when I started riding long enough to need an external battery for my phone. One of the compromises a phone app makes is checking with the GPS fewer times per second to save battery, which makes it less accurate (you can adjust this on some apps). The computer doesn't have that limitation. I also experienced overheating and an unreadable screen on my phone.

Now that I've switched, its nice not having your phone in your face on a ride. Its tough keeping yourself from looking down to see who texted or emailed you. Also, the computer has limited controls and big buttons its easy to find while you're rolling, as opposed to a touchscreen. On the other hand, if I'm just out exploring and want to look up a destination, or see where I am on a map, the phone wins every time, and I always end up getting it out to supplement the computer.

And to all the salty gatekeepers in this thread, you know when you're a real cyclist? When you like cycling. Happy riding.
Hey, Great post! The only thing I can see that you're missing here is does the Garmin play music. I always enjoy my favorite music app playing in the background when I'm riding. That being said, I have experienced blackouts from heat, on my old phone, I just got a new galaxy s21 5g phone and I don't know how it will perform (probably same), and I would hate to see it get broken....I think I like your supplement idea!
