I'm not sure I know anyone still using regular flat spade bits. There's so many better types if bits that do a spade bits job, and they do it much better. But, there may be some sentimental need?
Either way, I will shed no tears when slotted screws, and spade bits fade from existence

What's a better alternative? Curious as I'm a noob to this stuff...
Probably forstner or speedbor-style if I were to guess
This same set was posted a couple weeks back at this same price point. I'm certain this set has been $20 for months now because I was between this set and the Diablo set for $10 more. I went with the Diablo set and have not been disappointed. The set cuts through wood extremely well.

Interesting video here comparing the limitation of the speedbor bit vs. the new style bosch daredevil/diablo speed demons paddle bits (which BTW are the same type of bit made in the same factory).

I've always thought that forstner bits are primarly used with drill press when trying to create different circular depth cuts. I know they can be used with regular drills but I never thought there were considered a good replacement for paddle bits or hole saws.

Speedbor bits are too aggressive; if the chuck is turning the bit is advancing. Forstener for clean, flat bottom holes. I'll stick with spade bits for boring holes in studs.
Not quite a one-for-one size comparison but similar price... https://www.homedepot.c

But yeah, a shaped bit with a screw tip is going to be faster than a traditional flat spade bit. However, they can be aggressive so if your goal is to get a cleaner hole by drilling from both sides, the non-threaded tip would be better.

I'm yet to watch the video, but from your comment, I can assume it was the VCG channel? Those dingus's are to tools what the show "Ancient Aliens" is to History. Lol.
But I could be wrong... clicking link now...
(Seems I was wrong... it wasn't VCG. But your point was valid in the uploaders "test".)
