Seems like a good deal on T47x units, which are just T80x units without Bluetooth and GPS data (but still has data capabilities, hence the "easy pairing" feature).

license-free FRS (22 channels and 121 privacy codes)
35-mile range (mountain-to-valley, otherwise 8mi open water and 2mi neighborhood)
IPX4 weatherproof (splashing water from any direction, no submersion)
built-in LED flashlight
"Easy Pairing" group call
NOAA weather channel and alerts
included rechargeable NiMH battery pack with microUSB charger (can also use 2X regular AA batteries)
2-year warranty

I'll go ahead and beat the ham radio folks to the punch: yes, the Baofeng UV-5R is a great entry-level ham radio, and if I was looking for something other than decent walkie talkies, I'd get the Baofeng.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

There is a TON of technical stuff being thrown around about these that I don't understand . . . I just need to know if my kids will like using them around the yard and on hikes? Thanks!
Technical translator here: A mile range is perfectly reasonable to expect, and these are meant to be easy to use.

Little more detail: 35 miles is marketing, you won't get that unless the two of you stand on mountaintops with fresh batteries and no civilization nearby. These don't need a special license. There will likely be interference and reduced range if you use them in an amusement park, since every other family has the same idea.

But connecting a couple of hiking parties across a half mile? Sure. And around the yard? Definitely.
This ham radio operator is going to tell you not to get a Baofeng UV-5R unless you have a license, but that if you really want the range advertised on this FRS radio, you should get a ham radio license because FRS doesn't really go that far except in ideal situations/environments.

Radio gurus, how would these compare to Midland smaller radios like x-talker for example? Thnx
The x-talkers are much better than these, Have more power and are better quality IMO.

Had a couple saved in my cart from yesterday. The link shows $84.99 but my cart still showed $36 for each pair so I completed my order. Hopefully it goes through.

Do these look as big as they seem from the pictures? They look kind of "tall" to me, but I'm not sure if it's just an optical illusion the way the photos are taken.

Also, why is there a handle at the bottom? Is that to be able to hang them upside down with a carabiner? If so, it seems strange to have the handle at the bottom instead of at the top, which would allow them to be hung upright.

Mine were supposed to be delivered today but now looking like tomorrow so can't comment on size. But hook on bottom seems better to me, if hanging upside down easier to grab and talk into without cord getting in the way. Just my opinion.

By cord, do you mean using a corded earpiece/microphone with this? If so, not sure why that would be an issue if the radio was upright. I'm assuming that the radio is being attached using the handle to one's belt or the belt loops on pants.

Seems easier to damage the antenna if hung upside down. Also, isn't the antenna supposed to be upright to get the best performance?

By cord I meant rope or whatever is hanging it to your belt. Not sure antenna direction matters for reception. I don't know how I would attach these. Probably just put them in a backpack pocket. I think they are pretty sturdy.

Not sure why the bottom has the handle thingy on it. Here is a picture of the size.

This has a spring type snap that is attached (and removable) to the back of the radio that you could clip to your belt, or whatever you would like.

Well first, taking a test and getting licenses shows you know which bands/frequencies you can transmit on and what power levels so as to not interfere with First responders/EMS/Fire/Police or local business operations.

i'm sure there's an app for that. lol
