I've been a big TiVo fan over the years but I have to admit I am a bit disappointed with the Stream 4k due to the fact that it doesn't play nice with YouTube tv. For the last several months I get video freeze with both live and recorded programs while the audio continues to play. This seems fairly common for other YouTube tv subscribers.

YouTube tv is my households go to app which makes my two TiVo Stream 4ks pretty much useless and I have purchased other streaming devices as a result.

Yes, but outside of YouTube tv, it's a great android TV device, comparable to latest Google Chromestick with Android TV. This is a great price. It has been steadily dropping, from 50 to 40 to 35 to now 29.

The same YouTube TV that keeps raising their prices to the point where they defeat the whole purpose of cutting the cord? The same YouTube TV that played hardball with Roku to the point where Roku took the app out of its store?

Yep, that same YouTube TV. While yes they have raised their prices they still offer the best solution for my household all things considered.

I wish TiVo would find a solution otherwise for those of us who rely on YouTube tv the Stream 4k has not been a good option for the last several months.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how is it with just the regular YouTube app? Same?

Android tv sucks.
Compared to what, Apple? I run android devices on all my TVs because they're capable of running sideloaded apps, and there's lots for android. TiviMate and Syncler are my go to's for live TV and on demand, respectively, though an Emby share can be nice as well. Does Apple even have apps capable of playing IPTV? If so, I highly doubt they're as polished as TiviMate and I seriously doubt Apple would ever allow an app like Syncler on their locked down platform.

The dynalink does NOT have IR on the remote, which was a dealbreaker for me as I just use the remotes that come w/ the sticks, not some fancy harmony remote or whatever with CEC etc.

I've had good luck with the Tivo Stream 4k, but now that it's abandoned as mentioned above, I would go with the onn from Walmart if wanting to get as cheap a device as possible. The drawback with these cheap devices for me has always been two things, no usb connectivity to expand storage and no ethernet for wired internet/networking. There are lots of people on youtube using an OTG adapter to add usb and ethernet, but all the OTG connectors I've tried put my devices into random reboots. Maybe if there was one that supplied additional power I would try buying another one, but that's what I suspect is too much power draw. Maybe even just changing out the microusb and end piece that plugs into the wall would be enough for the OTG adapters I got idk.

The only device with built in ethernet and ports for added storage is the shield, as I see the only modern Android TV OS box I know of with wired gigabit ethernet and usb is the MeCool KM6 Deluxe and it's over $100 putting it close enough to the tube shield that I just wouldn't risk it for trying to save a few bucks. Plus the MeCool KM6 Deluxe looks to have the same remote as the Dynalink I mentioned above, so probably no IR on it either.

At least having one shield in the house allows you to setup the shield as a NAS and record to it, and playback from it, from any android device in the house using TiviMate. I only trust a wired device for this, as a short drop in the stream will cut the recording off prematurely. I've had good luck with using a shield as a NAS for this, it will even start a recording while it's sleeping, and stay 'sleeping' while recording.

Tivo sucks now. When they were sold it was the end of TiVo that was awesome. It's been all downhill for years now.

Used to be the biggest TiVo evangelist since 1999, haven't recommended any TiVo products in probably 5 years.

Save your money.

Good article over at The Verge on this device. As another poster aluded to, it looks like you are buying into a dead Tivo platform if you jump on this...
