Then you are actually missing out on the best picture quality and lossless sound experience.
If only iTunes (and the other streaming providers) would actually stream movies at the same (or better) bit rate as physical media. But they don't. So I keep buying physical media. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that this set comes with a digital code included. But when I want the best presentation I can obtain for a particular movie, physical media is almost always it.
The studio is likely looking to hit a specific sale number on the previously released sets before announcing it and setting a date. Would not surprise me to see it pushed back to the Fall.

The problem with this logic is that a lot of the 4k uhd Blu-rays now are upscaled from a 2k master even though they were shot at 4k+. I very much see studios releasing a lot of current feaux 4k titles in actual 4k after they are rerendered and slapping a 8k label on it after they upscaled the true 4k render to 8k.
Special effects are rendered in 2k and nothing is really shot in 8k, so there'd be no incentive for people to buy 8k discs. 4k is a niche format as it is (over 50% of disc sales are still DVDs), so 4k is likely to be the last physical format.

I've never watched these. I know some movies people say theatrical is better while others prefer extended. Which version is better to watch for a first view? Does extended actually add to the story or is it just extra stuff that drags it out unnecessarily?

You're that new to digital? You need to make an account with a digital provider (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, Google Play, Movies Anywhere). The codes that come with your movies can then get redeemed on one of these providers. The included slip usually has instructions on how to do it. Once it's redeemed it's saved to your digital library for you to stream via their app on a streaming device or smart TV.

Then you can get real fancy where some codes can be used by multiple people.

If you want to be frugal, there are sites/groups where people sell their digital codes to offset the cost of the physical copy

You're that new to movie watching? 😜(couldn't resist)
To a fan the EE is the best one to watch, since "new" at this watching the TE would make more sense.
The non fan may find the EE drags on to much.

Got additional 30% off from discover deal so it knocks it down to $49 including tax. Now it's cheaper than Target price after B2G1.

Touche. No, I have lots of movies I just never watched these. I watched the first hobbit but it seemed kind of corny to me. I've seen parts of the first two LotR because they came out when I worked at a movie theater

You're not understanding what I said. You buy upscaled 2k discs now marketed as 4k. We'll be buying upscaled 4k discs marketed as 8k in 10 years.

I got this set on preorder during Target's B2G1 promo last winter. I'm lucky to have received it. For those on the fence, I highly recommend it. I'm not an expert, but the quality of the transfer seems excellent to me. It's the definitive way to watch!

What's the best player to use?

I really would like to own a 4K version like this but there are so many reviews about discs skipping. Anyone here own this set already? Just wondering if the discs might disagree with some 4K players and not others.
No skipping on my Xbox Series X.
