FYI it's cheaper to buy from WalMart if you are charged sales tax because the tax is applied to the full price on Amazon before the coupon amount is deducted. If you add a protection plan the whole gross amount is taxed on Amazon as well, while there is no additional tax with WalMart for adding a protection plan -- which WalMart has for $34 for 3 years instead of $49.99 with Amazon.

Amazon total w/ 3-year plan - $378.58
WalMart w/ 3-year plan - $362.59
Big fan of the product but the app is sketchy af.

Does Roborock model numbers describe different generations of the same product, or simply distinguish the models?

For example, Neato has the D3, D5, D7 and these describe different models, not newer generations of the same model.

Anyhow, I just saw a vacuumwars video on the Roborock S7 and it looks like the best for my needs given combo carpet and hard floors (mopping function).
I opted for the S6 Pure since it's half the price of the S7. I just don't know if I can justify $650 for one of these puppies.

Yeah, I'm certainly not dropping that kind of money on a robovacuum. I've owned 3x Neatos, 2x Roombas, and a Scooba and never paid more than about $240 for any of them.

If the Roborock is as good as reviews say though, I can sell everything and consolidate. I'll wait for a sale on the S7. Having a bot that can vacuum and mop on the same mission sounds pretty good to me.

The Chinese versions? Yes. International versions? its a clusterfark.

S6 Pure (P5) for example has nothing to do with the S6 (T6) or S6 MAX V (T7 PRO). All 3 are based on different generations of robots.

S4 MAX (P5) is basically the S6 Pure (P5) without mopping pad. Apparently tuned for higher airflow.

The P5 model is a entry robot relatively for Chinese market.

- Pricing in international market is also bonkers and doesn't make sense.. import taxes or not.

Weren't Roborocks like $200 when they were first available in the US? I seem to remember them being both a great performer and low cost based on reviews, but now they seem to be selling for as much as the premium brands.

I have the s4 max and s7 for it's mopping capability. The s4 seems to do a better job on carpet.

Me and you both! It cost about $400 to include the 3-year warranty with the S6 Pure. Hoping that's worth it. Also hoping this is the one and only time I have to do buy one of these for a good 5+ years.

I snagged the S6 max from SD a few weeks ago for $380. Although I've heard the mopping is a gimmick, I got it for its stellar pet hair performance on hard wood! It's still a top tier vacuum regardless of mopping

Agreed. Great product. Terrible app. I have 3 Roborocks (2 S4 and and S6). The recent app upgrade on my iPad now shows only small images (like for a phone). Garbage app and the UI is pretty terrible too and full of bugs.

I think I was confusing Roborock with Xiaomi Mi.

Just pulled the triggered on the S6 pure. $50 more for bigger Bin size, mop capability, and active hair removal feature.

The Roomba / Lidar question keeps coming up. Someone asked in the Roomba subreddit a few months back and there was a lot of useful info on both sides regarding lidar and vslam:

As someone new to robo vacuums. How well do these work on relatively thick carpet?

If it's thick pile carpet, you should be fine with any models other than the original S4 (no longer available), which was lower to the ground. All of the newer models have 0.79 inch clearance height. If it's long, loose weave like shag, then the spinning side brush could potentially get tangled and hung up in it. If you're not sure, then buy Prime with free returns and try it out.
