I have both the new and old, scroll wheel performs fine and similar on both. Sounds like a defect.
The industry would call it a "remaster."
I had the original Mx518 and can't remember any downsides to it, but this new one I threw out after a month. The scroll wheel is utter trash, you can't even rely on it to accurately scroll when browsing the web. Within the first week I noticed that when scrolling to the next tactile bump, it sometimes didn't actually register until I wiggled the wheel. I thought maybe it needed to be worn in, but it just got worse. And of course that makes it completely unreliable with gaming, which is its advertised purpose.

I grabbed this on a previous sale trying to meet that good old nostalgia trip, but I find that I highly prefer newer designs like the g pro wireless, g203, m711, and viper mini. I think it's just too large of a footprint for competitive fps. Maybe if you've got very big hands and palm grip, this would be a good choice.

Previous owner of MX510 and MX518 here, and can almost bet you my grandma's best casserole that whoever came up with the naming scheme did this to prey on those with nostalgia feels for the old MX generation. Not gonna lie, I got excited reading this post seeing the MX518 name again, but can't possibly see how it's going to live up to the reputation of its predecessor.

Elude the nostalgia and you'll find this mouse isn't great at all, even for $20. The LOD is atrocious and will cause your sensor to trip out every time you reposition your mouse, which happens a lot if you're doing any sort of competitive FPS play. Not a fan at all, buy with caution.

Bought one of these on release as I'm a huge fan of the original.

The higher DPI is super annoying on my work laptop, but otherwise works great on my gaming rig.

I like it because it's not super light like some newer mice tend to be.

I bought a whole new set of these MX518's to replace other mice. I have one each of the original MX510 (red), and MX518 (wavy silver), both are still working great. But in the last 8 months of using the new MX518, I have to say they did a great job replicating the feel and balanced weight. The improved sensor is so much smoother. I have enough of these to last me until I'm dead now.

why not? it's the same shape and size, but with a newer sensor.
it should be better than the original.

Still using my original although it's been demoted to my office computer mouse. What a legend. That and my original Z2200's are the only early 2000's computer items I have still going strong.

It wasn't so much the hardware specs, but how nostalgia colors how we remember things. Those people who had a MX510/518 awhile back probably remember it as the best mice they ever had, so they'll expect this to meet or exceed those expectations. The problem is it'll never be as good as how they remember the originals. Same thing happens with movie remakes, songs, etc. Make sense?

This is my primary mouse for work, so it gets used 40+ hours a week for sysadmin stuff. No gaming. I'd highly recommend it for this purpose. It has the perfect number of buttons for frequent key combinations (Ctrl + W to close window/tab), and the tracking is always spot on. Love being corded so I never have to worry about batteries.

My only gripe was the scroll wheel. Each click was initially a lot sharper than my old MX and even some Microsoft mice I've tried. Like, audibly sharp with every notch. But, as expected, it mellowed out after a couple months of use, and it's now almost as smooth as I remember my old ones being.

Also: this is the standard sale price for this item (it was the same for a week or so at one point in BB's daily deals), so if you're on the fence, it'll be back around soon.

Can you explain a bit more? I have a few Logitech mice with double-clicking issue that I otherwise like for their ergonomics. I just didn't want to get into soldering replacement switches.

Most often a double clicking sensor is caused by the tiny metal 'spring' inside the plastic sensor assembly being worn out..instead of springing back to neutral, it'll double tap in on position. You pop the top of the sensor off, carefully remove the 'spring' piece (because it can fly off somewhere), and 're-bend' it, which restores its springiness. Reassemble and the sensor won't double click anymore. Have done this twice to G400, works on any omron switch. Youtube has videos.
