2012--End of the World? Your thoughts welcome.

Okay, so I have an older sister who is OBSESSED with reading about 2012 and the Mayan Long Count calendar. She is absolutely convinced that the Mayans were onto something and that Armageddon is just a stone's throw away.

This morning she called to tell me about a movie that is being released in November called 2012 that is, obviously, about the end times.

Okay, so aside from the fact that my husband and I think she is a one french fry short of a Happy Meal on this issue, she appears pretty normal about other issues/situations. But she harps on this 2012 all the time to anyone who will listen.

I finally Googled it and read a little but don't find it to be any more or less impressive than the Nostradamus (sp?) guy. I think people can pretty much read anything they want into things.

So my question is, anyone here ever spent any time reading about this 2012 stuff? Thoughts?

I (unfortunately) live in the "buckle" of the Bible Belt down here and you should see how the church folks react when you ask them about it. I brought it up the other night just to see if anyone had ever heard of it (yep, was too lazy to Google it at that point in time), and I thought a couple of the blue hairs were gonna start to spot or something.

They're funny about the non-religion stuff.

People must have kids at an old age if the family has only advanced five generations over a millennium.

I live in a strange and religious and conservative area.

You have no idea how many total nut jobs have told me that Obama is the AntiChrist, and that these are the end times, so therefore, the Mayans were right, and the world ends in 2012.

Obamacare has enabled future generations to live to 500 years old.

I live in NC, and I like it. Seems like you are asking for an argument by bringing it up in conversation with "church folks". Of course they are going to give you their point of view, which not surprisingly, would probably be religious. I would hope that those "church folks" would be faithful in their beliefs which probably wouldn't include going by the Mayan calendar. jmo

I know, right? I'm Conservative, AND Religious, and even I will not stoop to calling the man the AntiChrist! That's inventive thinking right there!

I just finished a book on the subject. It's actually a countdown to an alien invasion, but it's OK - the good guy aliens who currently live among us will keep the bad guy aliens from eating our souls. Grin

I don't like Obama at all, but some people are just acting like idiots. Especially the whole "birther" movement. Birth certificate crap isn't going to get him pulled out of office. I'd tell these people to quit wasting their time and instead put it towards making constructive criticisms outlining their problems with his administration, but I don't think they're smart enough to that.

Far-right and/or religious wackos, media coverage, and Bush have all really hurt the Republican party. I wish people would realize that they're doing more harm than good.

Well, D, it's a basic human nature, that if you do not like someone, and are not intelligent enough, or are too lazy to debate their merits or lack thereof, then you just say bad stuff about them.

How many times have you have a friend tell you, that they really hate their co worker, and when you ask why, they just go "she sucks" no explanation, no reason, etc.

It's human nature, and it's annoying, lol.
