This phone reached End Of Life last year in December. Please read this article before you decided to purchase a device that doesn't get any updates or bug fixes.

FYI.
Pixel 1 and Pixel 2/2xl do not work on Visible Wireless. It's a known issue.
Can get data, but no voice or MMS even with the correct APN settings.
I just picked up an unlocked 2xl from WOOT, and Visible Wireless is a no-go.

The model number is GA00138-US which is the US factory unlocked 128 GB black model, so it should be possible to unlock the bootloader. Only the Verizon variants of the Pixels have permalocked bootloaders.

Ah that's really unfortunate. I'd love a stand alone camera that was the exact profile as a phone! I know I'm one of a few out there, but if I could just have an android digital camera I'd be a really happy camper! I've been considering an older iPhone or maybe a pixel 3 for my needs. Any suggestions for sub $150 range? As a designated device, so I don't care about other features.
Do you have to edit photos on the phone? People usually have a good monitor to edit photos with. This phone can take great still pictures, but is not ideal to edit them.

If these came with new batteries, I'd go for it. My Pixel 2 had to be charged multiple times a day from barely casual use end of last year. And I got it when it came out. I'd say these batteries would share the same fate.

So called Google Vanilla (Nexus and Pixel phones) are supposed to have lifetime updates or X number of years guaranteed? I haven't seen a single person who own one of these phones, they are mediocre at least, not mainstream, I guess some people buy it because they hate 3rd party customization and then they install 3rd party launchers anyway because google's own was really limited at the time.
Pixels are just fine, and if you have never seen one how you can make any of those determinations? My Pixel is no different than any of the Galaxy S6/7/8/9 I used.

Is this worth it to use as just a camera? I'm looking for a nice pocket camera but phones are the way to go with built in editing apps and such. I have one of the cheap galaxy phones as my main. I'd like a nice camera around this price point.
In my opinion, absolutely. At least it still has the high quality unlimited storage for photos. Don't let some comments dissuade you about the camera quality. Unless you are an absolute pixel-peeper, the photos that come out of this thing are still so much better by default by a lot than other phones.

As someone who has been using an 2 XL for ~3 years now battery life is still fine.

Is this phone still getting security updates? If not - how are people keeping phone activity safe from hacking?

There's a 4a 5g which is sort of an XL (0.3" bigger, at 6.1").
Comcast/ Xfinity was (not sure if still active?) running a special on these $250 for keeping on 60 days of service at least to unlock. I forgot to get the unlock started right on the button (billing started on ship date) so ended up having to pay for 3 mo of service ($15/mo+ tax/fees)
so my net cost was ~300ish.

Xfinity mobile only gives 1gb for that $15 (and will charge another $15 if you go over that 1gb). Not at all prorated so it would really suck if you used 1.01gb. It used to be a OK deal for minimal data users the 3-4 years back when it was first offered, but with so many providers giving 2-3gb for <$20 these days I don't see why anyone would stay with them long term. At $10/gb I might have considered staying, but I mainly tried it for the phone.

It's no flagship phone, but 5g ready and works well enough so I'm happy.

I am still using this phone bc I'm cheap. Yes the display has pretty bad colors but the phone has worked great for me. Still speedy and camera is excellent. Will definitely go back to the pixel line when I need to replace.

Been rocking a pixel 2 for prob like 4 ish or more years and love it. One major repair i had was fixing the power button but aside from that. One of my best phones. Bought a one plus 8 on sale but considering this as another backup

Yes after 3yrs of discharge/charge cycles the battery life will diminish. Come back in 2023 & tell us how it's going.

Wowzers I can't believe there is still a market for super old phones like this. Surely there is something newer within $100 of this price range that would be much more modern and worth paying a bit extra for? I used to have this model back when it originally released and it was a great phone for it's time, but after a year and a half or so my battery performance was quite bad.
