They killed off one of the main characters from the first game. A few idiots that were critical of the story sent death threats to the director and some of the voice actors. Regular fans that had issues with the story were lumped in with those rotten apples and labeled racists, homophobes and misogynists. Naughty dog also hired a shell company to copyright strike anyone that was talking about the story leaks before the game came out. Even people that were just discussing the leaks and not showing any images or video. That's just my two cents from my perspective. I just don't see how attacking your customers is good business.
I think people need to get over themselves. The game is perfectly fine. It's not woke just because there are lesbians in the game. I enjoyed my time with it. Pick it up if you haven't already. 20 bucks is a steal.
I loved the game, masterpiece

You should absolutely play the first one before playing part two. The entire story in the first game and the sequence of events at the end is what drives the story in the second game.

And don't listen to the haters. I paid full price for the game on launch day and don't regret it for a minute. The story isn't quite as good as the first, but it's still outstanding. The only thing I had issues with is that the game can be pretty brutal and draining at times because of the story and the violence. I'd recommend breaks every 2hr or so.

For $20 it's a no-brainer.
Thanks. I just got a PS so will def try out both.

Do you need to have played the first to play this one? Would part 2 be a better experience for those that haven't played part 1?
yup, play the remaster of the 1st before the 2nd. the story won't make much of any sense Smilie
also, the first is a fantastic game that everyone should play.

I would rather play Death Stranding in real life as the delivery man than play this garbage.

Because Neil Cuckmann turned into a gigantic douchebag. Do some Google-fu and you'll see why nothing with his name attached to it will see a dime of my money ever again.

IGN are paid shills and a wholly unreliable source of information. I haven't trusted anything they've said for years.

Yeah it's a great game, even if it's not quite as good as the first (which is a high bar being one of, if not the best video game of all time.) And anyone calling it woke must not be much of a fan of the original game since they clearly never played the DLC which provide Ellie's backstory.

Honestly, easily worth $20 despite the game's shortcomings. I completely agree with the critiques. The story is definitely too "woke" and you'll find moments when you cringe when every character is LGBTQ…I mean most people agree with the message but it seems forced just for the sake of being progressive.

That being said, this is still a fantastic game. The gameplay is more fun than the original, and the visuals are phenomenal. Even better looking on old gen than most current next gen games. The ending to the story is fantastic, although that's obviously just a personal opinion. There are also plenty of great shocks and twists to the story to keep you interested despite the liberal foreplay, much like the first game. Don't let the naysayers bring you down, this game is still worth your time and among the best games out right now at this price, even if not nearly as great of a story as the first game. Although let's be honest, there really isn't another game that has a story that good.
This a disingenuous post. Did we play the same game? There were only a a few LGBT characters and the main focus of the story was on the revenge plot... not any of their personal experiences being LGBT (for some characters it was briefly explored, but not really in a significant way...)

What is the "progressive" message that you're referring to?

This will be good in a definitive ps5 version with all dlc and part 1 for 19.99.
Just to be clear here, you must be referring to the DLC from the first game. This second game has no DLC.

If you played the first game, (spoiler) Suffice it to say, TLOU2 starts off with the consequences of that choice.

The problem many had was that the game doesn't just follow 1 or 2 threads, but about half a dozen so the player never feels like they control one story line with one conclusion.

Now, add to that changing POV where you play both sides (not just play Ellie).

It's not confusing at all, and I think the developers did a great job splitting up the gameplay, BUT, from a story perspective I found it a mess.

Finally, although I think the game is a masterpiece, I felt relieved and completely drained when it ended.

Replay the 1st game though and compare the gameplay. I did and it'ss like night and day, which is crazy because TLoU gameplay is still solid.

ND really outdid themselves here. Not sure what more they can do apart from further AI improvements and brand new enemy types.

Speaking of AI, with the additional power from the PS5, I think they'll be able to set up more moments with AI fighting against each other.

I have no issues with the games left leaning content (actually I thought it was a nice change of pace from the oversexualization games generally do).

It is a great game from a technical standpoint. The detail that is in this game is unmatched and it is truly the best looking triple A title from any studio.

The main problem I have is that the main character is flawed and one of the strongest themes is how far you would go for revenge and how that leads you to just lose everything. Almost to try to prove their point the story pushes those consequences to the extreme. This means you end up being forced to do abhorrent deeds and then you are later made to feel bad about the fact that you did it because news flash if you do bad things then usually it doesn't end up well for you. Eventually near the end I was screaming at Ellies poor choices because you can see the train wreck that is coming. You see that she is smart and resourceful and you want to believe she can change but she never does throughout the entire campaign. It becomes a draining and for me an empty experience because Id like to believe that even if I were utterly self consumed with rage and vengeance I wouldn't have made the ridiculous choices she made. In the first game Joel makes one of these decisions that I didn't agree with but it's very justified and you can't blame him for making that decision because for him the risk was worth the reward. In this game Ellie repeatedly makes these similar decisions however the situation is really different because she isn't at all justified and the risks she takes is not at all worth the reward. I really I don't need my stories to end all happy and rainbows. But even in any other setting this game is hard to swallow. Imagine if you were playing a Superman game where Superman was an angsty teen and makes stupid decisions and then bad things happen because of it. It betrays the character and becomes a slogfest because you're just left wondering why they made the story design decisions they did.

TLDR great game visuals and mechanics but questionable story decisions that make the game difficult to play
I don't want to discuss plot here because of spoilers, but there was a simple reason that indicates why she made some of those decisions. I'd rather PM to discuss though. There are also some excellent YouTube videos that cover the story.

The story isn't perfect by any means, but deserves a lot more credit than people give it. It's also better than 99.8% of games out there anyways.
