I just returned an open box excellent the other day which should've been an OB fair at best (no box, no stands, no remote). Found out it was a display model with over 8000 hours of screen on time (never turned off in almost a year). TV is amazing and this is a good deal, but I couldn't justify an OLED with that much usage. So if you go the open box route, make sure to check the usage hours.
The only thing missing from this TV is HDMI 2.1, but if you want an OLED with excellent picture quality then you're in the right place.
Only wanting a 55" OLED for gaming right now.
No 2.1 is a dealbreaker

its a 2020 model and retailers probably overbought units and MSRP was probably prohibitively high for most of its lifecycle when it was current against LG units. If I had to guess

I think the CX was cheaper + went on sale way more often

Then there's that CX has 2.1 ports and this doesn't, and is still waiting on a VRR firmware update. For gamers thats a deterrent
The Sony A8H lacks HDMI 2.1 ports, and it most likely won't get VRR. People who bought the X900H (2020) and other 2021 Sony models are still waiting on VRR support.

true to first point

I would buy the tv with expectation that VRR is not coming even though they said it is, buy on what is delivered now not what could be later but...

A reputable source said they spoke with Sony and they told him December that will follow after some CEC spec update certifications get passed

I think theres a possibility it may

in any case this deal is dead

and neither matters to someone who is going to be watching tv on this set

I stopped dragging my feet and pulled the trigger last night on a new one. Thanks OP. Pretty pumped coming from what was a decent Sony TV in 2017, but the blacks (if you can call them that) were always getting in the way of the viewing experience in the evenings.

This is a pretty ignorant question, with quite possibly an obvious answer, but I'm going to ask anyway. When you have an OLED on a movable wall mount (pull out and angle) like this one, is it a big no-no to be pulling on the sides of the display to adjust the TV? It never felt like an issue with our thicker TV from 2017, but these skinny ones make me nervous and I want to make I and the wife get the memo.

I got one the last time these were 1200 for 719 open box. It's SUPER thin so I wouldn't move it often if on a flexible mount like you mentioned.

Still floored by the picture quality on this!

Weird, I just gave away a 2007 and 2014 Sony. Both still working flawlessly. Seems you're just unlucky, probably best to stay away from Vegas.
Or it means Sony has fallen into the "They just don't build them like they used to." category. And when it comes to AVR equipment, hardly anybody does anymore.

btw- when I finally upgraded to a 4K TV , my 10 year-old Bravia was still working fine too. Even the old remote control has a more premium feel and build quality to it than these new ones.

I should have clarified that it's still at a good price, at $1299. Cause when I looked Sunday night, it was back at $1899

Just got this delivered and unpacked. Picture quality is of course fantastic. But that was no surprise as I have experience with a (2015-era, but still) LG OLED.

The sound surprised me. My expectations of TV sound are extremely low, and this easily surpassed them. I don't think I've ever heard so much bass from a TV since flat panels were a thing.

This safety notice taped to the rear cracked me up: "Moving an older television to a new place in your home: Many new television buyers move their older CRT televisions into a secondary room after the purchase of a flat-panel televisions..." I doubt that even 1% of these TVs are replacing a CRT TV!

ETA: One picture quality difference vs the LG OLED from 2015 is the Sony's noticeably superior uniformity. The LG had a slight pinkish hue on the left 1/8 or so of the screen, and on grays it showed some banding (vertical bands that were noticeably darker). The Sony has none of those issues, with essentially perfect uniformity, no noticeable "dirty screen effect." This is probably due to OLED panel technology/QC having progressed in the past half-decade, even though OLED reached perfection early on in terms of contrast and viewing angle.

Weird...I wonder if the "subwoofer" on mine is broken because I think the sound sucks on this thing. I've played with the equalizer and sound setting for hours and just cannot get it to sound good. It sounds muffled compared to the TV I replaced and am accustomed to.

All Sony OLED TVs use panels from LG, currently the only supplier of OLED TV panels. Sony uses its own video processing (which most agree is generally superior to LG's) and smart TV interface (Android TV instead of webOS). Very generally speaking, differences are relatively subtle, but Sony is better for video and movies, LG is better for gaming.
