Great first guitar or travel guitar from an established brand. It won't sound as full as larger, costlier guitars, but you do get the Gretsch name and style with a lot better playability than anything else in this price range. Typically runs around $180.

Personally I think if you want a cheap or small or cheap small guitar, and care about quality, you can't do better than Yamaha.
I don't have any experience with this acoustic, but I believe what they are saying is that due to it's high action (how high the strings set over the fret board) and it's unique tone, you'd only want this as a niche acoustic, something to pick up and mess around with and play kind of hard on. If you're looking for something better to learn on or to have as your only acoustic they are recommending a Yamaha as a better entry way into learning guitar
Great guitar especially at this price point. My son tried one out in guitar center a few years ago and had to get it. He has numerous higher quality guitars and this is still one of his favorites.

Does it have any kind of truss adjustment? I know it's only $125, but there's a threshold of being able to make guitars at this price point playable.

Edit: saw other comments about truss adjusting/buzzing issues. I'm gonna pass. Prob worth it to spend another $75 for something for my kid.

If it wasn't a pandemic situation, I would say go to your local mom and pop music store and look at Teton Guitars. Not crazy expensive and can hold its own in sound compared to more expensive brands. Just FYI. Also avoid Sunlite guitars. Can't go wrong with Yamaha but I bet you'd be surprise playing a Teton and Yamaha next to each other.

Based on my agony trying to learn guitar as a kid, the reviews mention "high action" - which means that the strings sit far from the fretboard. This makes them hard to press down, the fingers get cut up more, the kid hurts, the kid doesn't want to practice because the fingers burn like fury.

Although you could bring it to a shop to lower the action ("tune up"), you may as well just spend that extra money and buy a guitar that's easier to play.

Just my opinion.

I got my kid (8) a Squire Mini (3/4 size) electric Strat to start. Much more comfortable with the body contour, easier lighter gauge strings to play with lower action, and can also practice with lower volume or with headphones on. Also doesn't hurt they think they look cool like a rock star. Generally electric is just a better way to start for beginners IMO.
