The 10600k is the best bang for the buck if you can find a reasonably priced moto. I bought the KA and 590UD mobo for $280 on new egg a while back.

After building, upgrading almost every year or 2 I just realize that I dont need to spend money to upgrade only to find out I dont even use all the power and features. I still have my Core i3-9400 pair with gtx 1060 and it still runs most game at max settings for me. Saved so much money since then so I advice those in same situation as me to just buy what you need, maybe a few year

I'm not knocking this post...in fact I was looking for a reason to upgrade cheaply but I'm still running an i7-2700K with a 1060....and I'm able to play most games at 1080P or higher with close to 60+ fps. Am I missing something here?

The i9-9900KF is going to be a good CPU for years to come. Just make sure you pair it with high bandwidth ram/low cas. 3600mhz C16 at minimum. Even better at 4000mhz C18 with your choice of RTX graphics card.
No, Intel CPUs and chipsets unlike AMD aren't sensitive to Memory speed or latency beyond the stated 2666mhz. Old wives tales notwithstanding. You can use high speed and low latency memory but won't notice any performance improvements or bottlenecks. Just buy the cheapest deal available at any time from a reputable brand. Often, higher speed memories have better deals than lower speed.

Making sure that they are in matching pairs to allow dual channel is the only thing that will make a significant difference.

AMD systems are a lot more sensitive because of the way they maps video memory to the CPU memory

Got it, thanks. For now I am looking for upgrading CPU as I already have a fairly fast SSD and RAM but I feel like CPU is showing it's age while working with large raw files. How can I find the most powerful processor compatible with my MSI Z170A SLI plus motherboard?
That MB can only take 6th or 7th gen CPUs and the most powerful would be i7-7700k which is only marginally more powerful than what you have to make it worth upgrading. You will need newer motherboards for newer generations.

Whether newer generations will help depends on what kind of processing you do and whether it incolve multi-thread parallel processing.

This is if you want to game in 4K or 250FPS or for production work. Both of those things will need you to upgrade the GPU as well -- which is not possible to get for the next 2 years at least unless you want to spend $1800 on it.

Every lesson has a price, and lots of $$$ when it comes to consumer electronics. $1,500 for a smartphone and $500 for a smartwatch every 2-3 years? PASS. Moore's law is pretty much broken for CPU's and SoC. We won't see much progress beyond 5nm in the next few years.

I'm still using my 4970K system and it would do me another decade if it wasn't for the TPM requirement coming down the pipe.
You can bypass it. I've been using win11 for a few months on a 4690k. I also have secure boot off because the 290x in the pc doesn't have uefi. Both are bypassed with shell commands during install.

Guys, guys, guys, Alder lake is a month away and that will support DDR5. Anything you buy today will be obsolete in a matter of days.
DDR5 will have a significant premium due to EE design cost on the sticks themselves. You're better off waiting a couple years. Alderlake will support both DDR4/DDR5.

I have a desktop with Intel Core i7-6700K with MSI Z170A motherboard. Keeping everything else the same, would you recommend upgrading the CPU to i9-9900KF?

Edit - I have 1080 8GB and I am using the desktop primarily for large size raw file editing, gaming, and streaming as a media center.
so... not sure how comfortable you are tinkering but most z170 and z270 boards can be bios modded to take the 8 and 9 series chips. that said unless you are really attached to that board a z370/390 board can be had for under 100.

i did the mod on an asus z270 and its running a 9700k.

It's just not worth spending more money on expensive memory in order to see 1 or 2 FPS improvements in games.

This particular seller says non-returnable. No thanks.

9900k is worth it for video support alone (especially in today's GPU market) especially when its just $14 more AND returnable.
You wouldn't need to return it anyway. Intel has decent warranty RMA service.

how comfortable are you modding your pc? you can bios mod most z270 boards to take the 8 and 9 series cpu's. there are some hardware mod steps involved that can make it a bit harrowing for first timers but its not that bad. you can read more on it at win raid and hwbot plus some guides on youtube.

Processing power helps with more than gaming. But if that's all you do on the machine you're alright. If you render or edit files en mass or code, it's always worth it to get the best stuff.
