The 3800 also has better HDR handeling. The 5040 needs a lot more adjustments to get it's HDR to look good. The 3800 is a bit more automatic while the 5040 will require to call up some user presets (honestly though, you should be using user presets for both).
The 3800 should always be put on a grey screen no matter the room.

I suspect that over the next 6 months we will see some really interesting options. You have a capable projector now so I'd stick with it. Maybe get a new bulb if you need one.

The projectors I'm referring to in that comment are about ones that would be similarly priced to this LG +/- $1000. At least that is my hope. 2-3 years is about the end of the lifecycle for the popular models from the big manufacturers. BenQ's HT3550/HT5550 are 2 years old now, same as Epson's 5050. Epson's 4010 is even older. Laser and LED projectors are now being consistently released and both Epson and BenQ don't have one in the very popular $1500-3000 home theater market. Aging existing models, increase in laser models by competitors, and a new Texas Instruments .65" DLP DMD all lead to many believing new models should be coming soon. Covid has also delayed things, and still is, so there's a belief that there is a backlog of innovation yet to be released.
The big question mark is that .65" DMD. The current most common DMD is the .47" that is used in this LG. They shift it 4 ways to create a darn good 4K image. .47" is very small though and the smaller the chipset, the worse the contrast. The new .65" is also going to shift 4 ways but it will remain a native 1080p unlike their previous .67" DMD that was half 4K and it shifted twice. The new one theoretically should have better contrast while staying super sharp. Since it is natively 1080p then it should also be 3D capable unlike the previous .67" 2x shifter. The question is what price will the projector be that uses this DMD? I'm doubtful it will be an HT3550 replacement at first but a $2000-3000 projector is possible. We shall see. A laser-based projector using this DMD could be very exciting for the DLP space.
I guess that goes for any projector that does not do 4K 60 HDR gaming.
The Epson is limited to 10.2 Gbits per second. The best it can do is 4K 60 8-bit at chroma 4:2:0. So basic SDR gaming which was real popular, oh my god, I lost track now, years ago :-)
By today's standard, it really is a pass if you want to do any kind of gaming.

Naturally, bright outdoor scenes always look good because the way that the brain works in understanding contrast. But those dark scenes, like the game of thrones series, really would be lackluster to watch on a DLP that's out there today.
