If they can make a 135" OLED for $3500-$4000, I would get that over a projector. Somehow, I don't think that will ever happen at that price.

If anyone is wondering, resale value of the Samsung speakers seem to go for around $599/699 on ebay brand new. If you do not need the speaker, the deal becomes something like taking $500ish off from projector's MSRP price.

Projector and integrated display are separate use cases, they don't really replace one another.

Do u like the Epson 3800, or a refurb 5040 is a better deal, for around $1500
The 5040 refurb will have the potential to put out a much better image than the 3800 but the 5040 can only play 4K HDR @ 30hz or less. This will work fine for blu rays. If you are trying to game then I think it will also handle 4K SDR @60hz, but no HDR. An Apple TV 4K first gen is a perfect pairing with it since the AppleTV 4K can't even stream 4K HDR @60hz in reality. It has a flawless match rate/range feature. Other streamers either take too much manual adjustments (Nvidia Shield) or just won't send 4K HDR at all to it (Roku, Fire TV).

The 3800 also has better HDR handeling. The 5040 needs a lot more adjustments to get it's HDR to look good. The 3800 is a bit more automatic while the 5040 will require to call up some user presets (honestly though, you should be using user presets for both).

The 3800 should always be put on a grey screen no matter the room.

RE the epson 5050 and 5040, where will you notice the difference between the HDMI speeds? will it be with specific content (sports, motion etc) or will you notice a picture quality difference between them? im not really sure what the HDMI speeds do to make a difference essentially...
It's not about speed, it's about bandwidth. 4K HDR @ 60hz requires 18gbps so you can't send that to the 5040. So no modern 4K HDR gaming. Certain streaming boxes will not send HDR properly or will result in super choppy UIs. a HDMI 1.4 jack can result in a headache for some users. An AppleTV 4K is a great workaround though.

This would replace a w1070 in a basement with no windows, and an Elite screen ER100WH1 (cineawhite). Should I budget to replace my existing projector screen? Frown I think the 3800 sounds more intriguing than the 5040, especially for HDR and gaming

I'd say stick with the W1070 if you can. The W1070 still is a very good 1080p projector and the projector market is in a bit of a shift right now. Laser light sources are starting to really come on the scene. HDR is still being worked out (you want dynamic tone mapping and its slowly coming). DLP has a new 4K chipset that we should start to see new projectors include in the next few months. This chipset should increase contrast. Epson hasn't released anything new of note for 2 years.

I suspect that over the next 6 months we will see some really interesting options. You have a capable projector now so I'd stick with it. Maybe get a new bulb if you need one.

This is very interesting and I would like to learn more . . . do you have any links to articles on the chips/upcoming projectors? Are these new projectors going to me in the sub $5K range or are they going to be ridiculous expensive with consumer models to come years down the road?

I don't have any articles. I've gotten my information via many conversations with others on AVSForum and just watching the landscape.

The projectors I'm referring to in that comment are about ones that would be similarly priced to this LG +/- $1000. At least that is my hope. 2-3 years is about the end of the lifecycle for the popular models from the big manufacturers. BenQ's HT3550/HT5550 are 2 years old now, same as Epson's 5050. Epson's 4010 is even older. Laser and LED projectors are now being consistently released and both Epson and BenQ don't have one in the very popular $1500-3000 home theater market. Aging existing models, increase in laser models by competitors, and a new Texas Instruments .65" DLP DMD all lead to many believing new models should be coming soon. Covid has also delayed things, and still is, so there's a belief that there is a backlog of innovation yet to be released.

The big question mark is that .65" DMD. The current most common DMD is the .47" that is used in this LG. They shift it 4 ways to create a darn good 4K image. .47" is very small though and the smaller the chipset, the worse the contrast. The new .65" is also going to shift 4 ways but it will remain a native 1080p unlike their previous .67" DMD that was half 4K and it shifted twice. The new one theoretically should have better contrast while staying super sharp. Since it is natively 1080p then it should also be 3D capable unlike the previous .67" 2x shifter. The question is what price will the projector be that uses this DMD? I'm doubtful it will be an HT3550 replacement at first but a $2000-3000 projector is possible. We shall see. A laser-based projector using this DMD could be very exciting for the DLP space.

For anyone considering the Epson 5040 projector, and you really want to game on it, the Xbox series X 4K 60 frames per second HDR pretty unbelievable.

I guess that goes for any projector that does not do 4K 60 HDR gaming.

The Epson is limited to 10.2 Gbits per second. The best it can do is 4K 60 8-bit at chroma 4:2:0. So basic SDR gaming which was real popular, oh my god, I lost track now, years ago :-)

By today's standard, it really is a pass if you want to do any kind of gaming.

Nice write up. I personally like DLP tech... And even owned a DLP projector. But the contrast really is so lacking compared to LCD and LCOS.

Naturally, bright outdoor scenes always look good because the way that the brain works in understanding contrast. But those dark scenes, like the game of thrones series, really would be lackluster to watch on a DLP that's out there today.

Yup, I agree. I wish TI could find a way to increase contrast to even Epson UB levels. Other than contrast and single chip RBE issues I think it is the best projector tech.
