Staples has an HP 17.3" laptop on sale for 25% off this Labor Day if anyone is looking for a cheap one. I like the large screen because my eyes aren't getting any sharper, and my lap isn't getting any smaller Peace

It specs out well for the money. I am not big on HP laptops but I picked up one of these for my wife who just surfs and isn't very hard on them like I am. It is only an i3 but it is the newest series so is a bit faster than the old i5-1035G1 IIRC.

2.0Hz Intel Core i3-1125G4 quad-core processor
512GB SSD
Windows 10 Home
Free upgrade to Windows 11 when available
8GB DDR4 memory
Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution
802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax 2x2 Wi-Fi
41Wh lithium-ion battery with a run time of up to 8.25 hours
Bluetooth 5.0 provides excellent performance connection
Meets or exceeds ENERGY STAR and EPEAT Silver standards
Pair with a MU-MIMO router for a smoother online experience in multi-device homes
Go from 0 to 50% charge in approximately 45 minutes with HP Fast Charge technology

I could find any coupon codes to stack with it. Maybe some of your guys will have better luck.

Stopped by my local (not really that local) Staples and picked one up.

Initial impression -- for an i3 CPU, it's pretty decent! 4 Core / 8 thread. 3.7Ghz Turbo.
The SSD is an NVMe Samsung according to device manager.
The WIFI card is an Intel AX201 Wifi6 adapter.

The screen is fine. I've seen worse and I've seen better, but for a $450 laptop, it's a decent screen. Colors and brightness are acceptable.

The keyboard is confirmed NOT backlit. As a matter of fact, the picture on Staples.com of this unit shows the F4 key with a symbol on it of a lit keycap. The actual laptop has the F4 key blank. So there must be a model with a backlit KB, but this one is not it.

If you have questions, let me know. I've got a spare 8GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM I want to stick it in so I'll be opening it up.

edit: I forgot, it comes with McAfee, Wild Tangent Games and Express VPN bloatware. Easily uninstalled. Other than that, pretty lean.

edit 2: Here are pics of the inside. 2.5" SATA missing cable, etc.
IPS screen, no backlit keyboard:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c07639484

17.3" diagonal, FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS, anti-glare, 250 nits, 45% NTSC

Seems like a decent deal. I would just wait until windows 11 is out if you don't need a laptop now.

Save the hassle of upgrading and cleaning laptop of old files.
Cool if you want to be a Windows 11 guinea pig. I'd much rather get a Windows 10 laptop now and wait 6-12 months to upgrade to Windows 11, once the bugs in the OS and the drivers are worked out. Windows 10 is supported until October 2025.

For me, I haven't really seen anything in Windows 11 that is a *must have*. There is a *don't want*, and that's the centered dock bar/Start menu (ala macOS). It's like a bad Helen Keller joke on everyone!

Pretty sure for every story about how "Dell is worse", there is an equal story about how "HP is worse". There is much more to reliability of a product than one person's experience.

Professionally, I've sold and supported literally hundreds of Dell laptops and desktops and servers and find them to be VERY reliable. Some part of that is what you buy, for instance. Buy their cheapest, base model, and you get what you pay for.

You do realize this laptop states that it will support Windows 11 when released? That means drivers should not be an issue. As far as apps, if you have apps that aren't compatible, they're not going to work regardless if you buy now or wait.

You truly are making much more of updating that it really is.
You can't guarantee anything. I have done free upgrades in the past, it's never the same.

In fact upgrades is the lazy way of updating the OS.

You end up doing a clean install in the end if you care about the machine running at optimal and not wasting space with legacy files that have the old OS operating system on the 5 different partitions windows creates.

My advice to family members is to wait if you don't need it. There is no upside to getting a laptop that you don't need now. Sure the price is good, but deals will come around next year and maybe you will get better hardware when the chip issues get resolved as well.

You seem to be moving the goal posts in your reasoning why not to buy this laptop.

You're right, you can't guarantee anything. The 5 different partitions that Windows creates are very small in size (except your OS partition), so what does that even mean? Windows 11 has the same 5 partitions that are fixed in size (they don't grow or shrink so who cares how many files are on them?)

The wisest move is to not upgrade to Windows 11 right away. Need a laptop? This one will run Windows 11. Period. It's a good deal for a cheap laptop. Or wait until next year. All I'm saying is your reasons are really just excuses that don't have any real value.

Thanks for the post, purchased and repped.

Are you aware of any limitations on the board for RAM? I've been told some boards can only handle so much RAM, I'm not gonna go crazy, just curious

I am not aware of any limitations. I did put an 8GB DDR4-3200 module in the 2nd slot and it was recognized fine. The service manual only lists part numbers for 4GB and 8GB SODIMMS but makes no mention of any limitations.

What are you thinking, something like 32GB memory (16GB x 2)?

Yes, that's true of all motherboards. crucial.com is usually more accurate than the manufacturer, they say this can go up to 64GB (2x32GB).
https://www.crucial.com/compatibl...7-cn0173st

A couple options:

Various G-Skill
https://slickdeals.net/f/15253798-g-skill-ripjaws-series-ddr4-3200-pc4-25600-laptop-memory-64gb-2x32gb-224-99-also-32gb-2x16gb-116-99-16gb-2x8gb-64-99

Crucial at Newegg, 32GB $135 + tax
https://www.newegg.com/crucial-32...6820156263

Go for the 3200 speed DDR4 SODIMM.

If you just want to add another 8GB to get to 16GB, ideally you want to match the speed and timings of the stick that's installed. Use CPU-Z to get the info on what's installed, the Memory and SPD tabs.

I was mainly just curious. I don't do any crazy computing, not sure I would been from 32 vs just doing what you did and adding another 8.

Thanks for the feedback

I ordered one today through InstaCart for $429, but had a $30 service fee, so came out to be $10 more than OP's deal pre-tax.
