Lenovo needs to stop with the soldered memory. And do they still use whitelists for upgradable components like SSD drives and WiFi cards? The last laptop I bought from that brand was a huge frustration and I swore never again.
One memory soldered to systemboard, one DDR4 SO-DIMM slot, dual-channel capable

So you can probably change the 8gb chip for a 16gb and end up with 20gb if you wanted. Vendors max memory is not usually a true limit. The soldered memory is 4gb.

Just say no to Lenovo. This soldering of memory is just plain greed and is treating customers as suckers! you can get similar spec and price laptops from other reputable brands that can be upgraded. Example- I got an HP from Costco for $299 (couple of yrs ago) and I have 32 gb RAm installed and replaced the nvme (128gb) with a 2TB one.
With i5 10th gen processor this laptop would sell for much higher price if purchased as built.

Don't buy Lenovo

same design different variant I7 model. this ideapad model seem to have hinge issue especially right side. mine was broken after 6 month. i didn't drop but it was broke from inside. i went to costco they forwarded me to lenovo service center. they say it is my fault breaking it and without incidental insurance i should pay for fixing. costco only accept return within 3 month. i googled and found there were some people had same issue like me. i fixed by myself with epoxy but I saw some people paid like almost $300 to fix it.

Stay away from these cheaply made laptops. I've got 2 of the ideapad 5s from the last "deal" that was posted on the site. The laptops run slow as s#it. Buyer beware.

People on SD need to stop crying about this on budget laptop threads. Soldered memory leads to faster, cheaper, thinner, and more energy efficient machines. If you really need want to upgrade and customize your laptop, get a Framework [frame.work] or you're just pretending

I bought the Lenovo Costco had on sale in July for $499: Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop - AMD Ryzen 5 5500U - 1080p - Abyss Blue. Looks like the graphics card is different and the processor AMD Ryzen 5 vs Intel. Which is better?

I keep reading about broken hinges on Lenovo Ideapads. Found one thread at https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Gene...-p/5063546. Apparently, it's a common issue and seems to be an inherent mechanical design defect. Seems like even if the issue occurs and one is lucky enough to get it fixed under warranty, it's only a matter of time before it breaks again.

I bought an Ideapad 5 last month from Costco. Got a pretty good price when it was on sale and after using a $50 off $500 coupon on it. Haven't even opened the box yet. But I think I'm going to return it now just because of this hinge issue.

12GB of ram is more than enough for r he average user. My new Samsung laptop has 8GB and it's fine for what I need. I use it for web browsing, YouTube, Netflix, and music.
Here on slickdeals.net the average users need like 32GB of ram and up. Ahaha

I think it's been years since they used whitelisting - around 2014 I had an IdeaPad had whitelisted wifi cards. But all ThinkPad and IdeaPad laptops (including an IdeaPad 5 right now) I've used since at least 2017 have never had any issue with wifi and SSD upgrades.

Intel is a little faster in single-core, but AMD's a lot faster in multi-core, as it as 2 extra cores. AMD's Ryzen 4000/5000 also run a little cooler (and often with less fan noise).

the psref link above says only the 4gb is soldered, so you can probably upgrade

from what i understand, only the first 8gb (4+4) will run in dual channel, and the remaining 4gb (0+4) will run single channel
Exactly and that's a big NO NO.

The issue is not that. Due to 4 GB soldered, the dual channel advantage is restricted to 8 GB only no matter what you put in the other slot.

Genuinely curious, can you cite where it says the first 4gb will run in dual channel? My understanding was mismatching capacity will run in single channel (maybe my understanding is outdated). I couldn't find any info.

I never understood 12Gb of RAM in a discount laptop !
It's either 8 or 16, what's with the 12 !?! Hurts my brain a lot (what's left of it 😁)
I also never understood why most people need more than 8GB. If you are not a gamer or pro user, 8GB will get you fine with browsing and typing documents. Chromebook only comes with 4GB and does just fine. So 12GB or more is more than enough and I know people who want 32GB just so they can have 100 tabs open on Chrome.
